Time to start prognosticating regarding the theme for the 2014 regular issue commemorative silver dollar.

I know that the RCM is planning to mark the 100th anniversary of WWI and the 75th anniversary of WWII in 2014, but I'm guessing that they will be marked on coins other than the annual regular issue commemorative silver dollar. Why? The RCM is planning a multi-year WWI/WWII commemorative series and it hasn't typically used the silver dollar to launch such series. (The 2012 War of 1812 silver dollar not withstanding.)

In any case, I'm thinking the 150th anniversaries of the Charlottetown and Québec Conferences might be the selected theme for the coin that will be released in January. Yes, they have previously been commemorated on a silver dollar (1964), but with Canada gearing up to celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2017 and considering the pivotal role the conferences played in the Confederation, it seems very reasonable (at least to me!) to mark the historic events again.

What do you think?

Commems, could you please tell from your experience, why actually the beginning of WWII (and the WWI) commemorated, and not actually the end "The Victory" year?

The WWII had influence on whole the world, but since it RCM issue - was the Canada affected at the start (1939?).

I more understand, that 1944-1945 will be commemorated on the RCM's coins.

@Silveroid: From the recent press release by the RCM, it appears that they will be commemorating events throughout the 2104-2020 period, which covers the start of each war through to its completion.

As Canada was not yet a fully independent nation within the British Commonwealth in 1914, it was brought into WWI through its political subservience to Great Britain when Britain declared war on Germany; it happened in August 1914.

The Statute of Westminster in 1931 essentially granted Canada its political independence from Great Britain. So, at the outset of WWII, Canada made its own decision to enter the war. It did so in September of 1939 by declaring war on Germany shortly after Britain did.

It's clear that Canada was an early participant in both world wars and so 2014 does represent a milestone anniversary year for the start of each.

Hope that answers your question.

Last years mint survey included some hints. These were the themes presented.

100th anniversary of "Winnie the bear"
Series commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I
Series commemorating the 75th anniversary of World War II
50th anniversary of Peacekeeping in Cyprus
75th anniversary of the British Commonwealth air training program (e.g. featuring planes and pilots such as Billy Bishop)
100th anniversary of the birth of W.O. Mitchell
100th anniversary of the 1914 sealing disaster
75th anniversary of the first royal visit
25th anniversary of the Canadian Space Agency
150th anniversary of the Charlottetown and Québec Conferences

They've already announced the War series and Cyprus coin, and the Air training would appear to be another series. Winnie the bear cries out for a coloured coin, as does the CAS. Not sure W.O. Mitchell's birthday is very significant to many people or that commemorating a sealing disaster has great appeal.

I'd say the most likely for a commemorative $1 are the anniversary of the first royal visit and the anniversary of the Charlottetown and Quebec Conferences.

But based on the need to pump out 250-300 coins next year, I'd guess they will do all of them and then some.

@CC-Ottawa: From the list you provided, I'd have to agree.

I've never participated in one of the RCM's surveys. Do they present potential themes and ask your opinion? Can you make your own suggestions?

They generally present topics and ask for a response based on a scale of 1-10 (strongly agree to strongly disagree). I suppose there is an option to add suggestion but to be fair I never have.

But I'm not sure how much stock they put in our opinions given that they have to come up with so many themes now in order to push out so many coins. Really I think someone could suggested a coin based on a Tim Horton's double double and they would produce it because it would sell and they are out of ideas.

@ Isbjorn

As far as I know the series has been completed. There will be no more insects made of Venetian glass.

Of course with the mint one never can be sure...
