I wa wondering if you guys keep complete track of your collection. A while ago I thought it would be a good idea to catalog everycoin in my collection, but with all my wheaties and the Memorial cents in my folders, (not to mention all the state and nat. Park quarters), it got very tedious and time consuming. I pretty much stopped writing them all down, but I still feel like it would be important to have for financial reasons and such. Do you guys do similar things? Do you feel it is important to keep track of all your coins? Or am I just wasting my time here? Thanks for the feedback. (and if you do, how do you go about doing it?)

I use MS Excel to start logging my collection. I started with wheat cents since I was just starting to save them and put them in as I found them and wrapped them up. I will eventually do the same with the quarters and such.
A spreadsheet is a good place to start.

I started cataloging coins worth over $100. Then I worked my way down. Personally, I don't take the time to enter the data for each Statehood Quarter. I log the entire set as one entry. Not a lot of value there. Wheat cents, again, only the more valuable ones. I use an app on my iphone/ipad called us coin. You can run reports and log just about any kind of data you want and search the data any way possible. Time consuming but worth it. You link it to a Dropbox account and it store all of your data on the cloud so if you loose/change devices, your data is not lost. When I'm at a show or shop, I have access to all of my inventory including pictures. I really like it.

I do it with all my coins. But not Wheat cents or ones in folders. I use notebooks.

I have recently started to use the service Numista: http://en.numista.com/You can enter the grade and date of your coins from an extensive database that you can add to, and exchange them with other members. However, it is more oriented for world coins and you would probably not be able to keep track of more specific American varieties, etc. It's great for me, though!

I have an excel spreadsheet based on my Dansco albums. However I have found it easier to list the coins I still need rather than the coins I have. I have a separate spreadsheet that lists all of the coins and prices I have paid from ebay purchases and list a number next to them and have a folder with the correlating ebay auction pics. I have determined I spend to much money on coins.

Ya I spent a good 2 hours last month when I finally decided that I should catalog my collection. I only have about $2500 worth of coins which adds up to about 300 coins (Compared to some of the bigshots here) but it took some time looking for receipts and invoices of past purchases. Overall I think that it was a good idea. I ofcouse only a list of my valuable coins, bullion and scrap silver (I've probably got 3k-4k coins total). I suggest you do what I did, Catalogue only important coins. Eventually it won't be a hassle anymore because you'll do it as you go.

I have things like my silver dollars, halves, large cents ASEs etc cataloged. At least somewhat. My Danscos and coins in note books and 2x2 boxes...well, no. LOL I probably have more NOT cataloged than cataloged.

I track everything in an album or in my binders. I have rolls upon rolls upon rolls of wheat cents, and I have no clue how many are in there, but those are not specifically catalogued. Just about everything else is, though, including my extra "save it for later" Silver Eagle purchases that I keep in a coin vault holder.

I have every thing I own in excel, pick any year I have the # I have and each one graded so I know if to upgrade. This took a long time to do since I'm over 15,000 coins.

I catalog every coin I get in an excel spreadsheet. I do the same thing for all of my silver coins. I also keep track of the day it was cataloged on the 2X2 itself or on a sheet of paper for my Danscos.

I have been trying to log all of my coin purchases over the past year and a half. Most of my collection was pulled from circulation, but most of the rarer coins and proofs have been bought at shops or on ebay. Some transactions I've logged onto an EXCEL spreadsheet, while I have numerous other slips of paper around the house with more purchases listed; have to find them and put them all in one spot! I list them because I'd like to know how much they cost me if I (or my heirs) ever decided to unload them. Also, I have been prone to occasionally buy a 'double', and when I get around to selling one of them it would be nice to know if I got my money back or not.
