VERY nice photography! Are the ones at the top stereo pairs?

Yes, cross-eye stereo pairs. I think the angle is a bit too wide. I may re-render the RPM with a higher magnification and lower angle to see if it will be easier to view...Ray

Here's a less dramatic but less common RPM...1956-D RPM#4 in single view and stereo:

OK, I have to know: How many images did it take to get these stacks? You're moving the goalposts faster than we can keep up, Ray.

Pretty cool, isn't it? I actually think this is more than just a gimmick. I'm spatially resolving better than I can with a stereo microscope. Even with a stereo microscope at high magnification, I never saw the sharp "V" detail on the secondary mintmark inside the primary on the RPM#4.
But you're right SD, it does require a lot of images to make this happen. The last image was a 36 shot stack, and the step size was very small and uniform. So as you can tell I have some new equipment I'm testing out...

Brings me back to the very first days of my employment in my very first career job. I was looking at stereo pairs of aerial photographs for water catchment and bush fire protection management. I was employed as a land management survey draftsman.
Excellent stereo photomicrography.

Quote: So as you can tell I have some new equipment I'm testing out... You got a StackShot, didn't you? You're doing it again, Ray. This is a sea change in variety identification; the available detail with this technique will differentiate even the closest similar RPM's and overdates. It'll also extend the ability to attribute even worn coins with less-than-full detail remaining.

Quote: You got a StackShot, didn't you? Almost...I actually traded a lens for a custom-made vertical stacking setup. A guy wanted a Printing-Nikkor and had electromechanical skills to offer, so we traded. I was not happy with the accuracy and step size limitations of the StackShot (reading about it, not testing) and this guy recommended a Trinamic stepper and a fine-pitch linear stage with nominally 5x the resolution. I was thinking about doing higher magnification stacking (50x) but never did get going with it. Turns out the small step size is required for high accuracy 3D rendering at lower mags, so here's the result. And as you can imagine the optics are special as well, not just your run of the mill high res objectives... edited to add...this is done with 5 microstep spacing per image, so in theory I could get 180 images in the stack if needed...but my objective isn't THAT good...

"A StackShot didn't have enough resolution." The geek in me is giggling uncontrollably at this.
