What is the best way to silver or gold-plate a penny so it looks flawless like this one?

I want to make a poor man's version (silver-plated and gold-plated) of the 5-penny silver set. :D

I tried Googling but there's many methods like electroplating, putting it on a burner, using chemicals. I don't want one that makes the coin toxic to handle or inhale any fumes I shouldn't be inhaling. Any recommendations?

Unfortunately this is something that you might not want to hear.

Plating requires either cyanide, strong acid or sulphites. I am not well versed in this area but it does involve very nasty chemicals which I suggest you do NOT do this at home unless you really know what you are going to do. Believe some of our finest chemists may help here.

There may be gold / silver plating kits but I haven't heard much positive stories from them.

my dad used to have the stuff to electroplate in his basement.....nothing was toxic.....I used it for a school science project when I was about in Grade 6 or 7. A battery, copper leads, the solution....I think I copper plated a nickel, using a penny.

There's someone on the forum thread a out ebay that sells gold plated pennies. He's a member here. Maybe he can give you more info. Look at forum for ebay / ecrater, then thread topic, why is ebay removing my auctions. I hope this helps.

Check out the subject "Gold Brushing" in CCC's Numismatic Search. Lots of websites and utube stuff. MY interest is in fixing hairline problems on coins --- this may be a way of improving the appearance. You can also brush silver and copper----Am also thinking jewellers should know all about this.

It is illegal to plate Canadian coins. Think about it. I believe that you will not attempt to use them in a fraudulent manner but some will and do. Off metal errors are expensive. People get defrauded constantly from these. Please re-think your poor mans version.
