So today I had a about 2 hrs of my own time so I decided to tackle one of the Newfie pennies I recently received in the Landon auction... The before & after shots are below.. Sorry the picture qualities aren't great, I didn't want to take up a lot of time trying to get the perfect shot instead I wanted to take the time and put my efforts on the coin itself. I assure you; no newfies or coins or newfie coins were harmed in this process! In my opinion I took a very unappealing coin that few people would want to a point where if I spend another hour or two on it, I think it will really look nice in my collection. Your opinions please.

The "after" sure does look a lot better than the "before"

I'm against cleaning coins but that one you had no choice. Looks much better.

Me to.. as it damages the coin...
In my opinion... I not only got rid of the verdigris and made it more eye appealing.. but I'm hoping that from what I've done I will also inhibit the powers of oxidation and humidity for later on..
Regardless I figured I couldn't do any "wrong" to this coin.. and from where I'm looking right now I think I took a coin that I wouldn't want in my collection for fear of that green gunk spreading... to something that will be a very nice hole filler.

If I were to guess on the AgCoinAu method of cleaning, I would guess he used an Ultrasonic Cleaner?

At first I thought I shouldn't say but on second thought I think it might add something to the discussion..... First I took just a tiny dab of Vaseline and rubbed that into the coin for awhile I let that settle in and soften up I put on vasoline again light rub with my thumb & after that I took a wooden toothpick and tried to clean out all the details and gunk.....
Okay I put my head on the chopping block and I am ready for the axe... I await your responses....hope I didn't do anything too horrible

Never considered that, Sure would cut down on flying specks. lol I look at it like this. If you didn't tell anyone and they didn't notice the work, you win. The look of the coin seems to be great from the pictures you provided. Thanks for sharing.

fixguy: Ironically I feel I did this and in a way I'm telling everyone...
1) I don't really sell coins.. so this one here is for my own collection... I bought it as a large lot b/c I don't have many newfie coins...and this will fill one of MANY holes..
I don't think I will get rid of it until I look at updating it .. and that probably won't be until I have fill all/most of the other holes.
2) There is a very big stigma against cleaning/conserving coins. However from everything I have read it is my belief that vaseline wouldn't harm the coin and could possible inhibit further corrosive action.
I chose this coin as I don't think I could do this coin any harm... it was already a VERY ugly coin... it was also in a condition that lightly rubbing it with my thumb wouldn't cause any further wear. (at best this coin might grade F.... but I think it's a VG IMO) If this coin was EF or AU... I would be at a cross roads as the very process of loosening up the dirt by rubbing in the Vaseline would cause more wear spots...
In short.. I don't mind telling people I did this... in fact I suppose I'm putting it out there to start the discussion if there is a time and place for restorative practices.. and furthermore which ones are effective.
If ever it came time to sell this coin... I also would not hesitate to discuss what I've done to this coin... I think I would want someone to enjoy this coin ..... and we all know there's nothing worse than buying a coin and THEN finding out something about the coin....

I might use vaseline in the future - was it medicated or non scent?

Just the regular stuff.... but it came from a hand held tube.. I find using that better than the larger as I have huge sausage fingers so the using the hand held tube you can control how much you put on your finger... and you really only need a very tiny amount to start.

Thanks for the info, Ag. I've got a couple of coins I'm going to try that on, myself.

Not to put a damper on this thread, but it's worth noting what SuperDave said about your method in the thread below before anyone runs out and tries this on a high value coin. https://goccf.com/t/216880Conservation is recommended and important, but I don't think I would consider this conservation because the result only helped the aesthetics of the coin and wouldn't halt the underlying problem. It looks better though.

Agreed. I wouldn't try it on a high value coin, but I've got a couple of cheapies that might do okay with it. Thanks for the word of caution, chequer.
