Hey,

Came across this 1951 nickel in an album I recently purchased.
Looks like it has multiple errors mostly on the obverse.

I know this year in particular had a lot of mint errors and problems, but I have never seen anything quite like this for this year. Is it pretty rare? worth anything?

Has some luster on it as well so it's AU at minimum.
Reverse looks spotless and BU to me. Below is an image of the obverse.

It's been gone over by something strange. PMD.

See how the "A" in "cAnada" has its right leg smushed down? The weird dents happened after the strike. I'd put it back in a roll for someone to discover...

Ok, thanks for the reply.

If this happened post mint it must have happened early in the life of the coin.

Probably just keep it and put it back in the album it was in.

Thanks again

This is the 1951 commemorative nickel, more common than the one with the beaver. It is plated with steel, and meant for circulation. It commemorates the discovery of steel. (If I remember correctly)

The discovery/isolation of nickel, actually.

I always think it's interesting that we made a lone circulating commemorative in the 50s... but it makes sense, because at the time we were the top global exporters of nickel (I think we're still in second place or something).

So it's also a bit ironic that the commemorative nickel nickel is made of steel, because all the nickel was needed for the Korean War!

Actually, I think that the commemorative nickel was struck in 100% nickel, while it was the beaver variety that was struck in plated steel. Incidentally, 2 varieties of the beaver variety exist - the high relief and low relief.
