160 for an Ngc/pcgs slabbed 70 sound like a good deal?

Superhal - that is a very good price for a graded 70 set.

A lot of cancelled orders? I didn't like putting that money into the Westpoint set although I think its wonderful. The set was $140 so $70 a coin, and I just couldn't get over paying that much for an ounce of silver. Silver I think was $25 an ounce? I just wouldn't pay 3x spot no matter how beautifully designed a coin is on a recently minted coin, sorry, but that's just me. I put that money into the 5oz White Mtn ATB, only 20k made and its nicely designed. At $155, there at least $100 melt plus there are only 20k minted. I just feel the 5oz ATB program is the best bargain the mint is offering right now with the low mintage and not demanding a crazy high premium. I have zero regrets of not buying the Westpoint set. If I want an ASE ill just get the Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set and call it a day.

I would also not pay that amount for an ounce of silver. I'm not gonna pay an obscene amount on silver just because of its finish or where it was minted. Just not worth it to me.

I have also refused to pay for slabbed coins.. newer ones.. I actually don't own slabbed coins. I have been buying the 5 oz. ATB, trying now to collect the previous years, got a pre-order for the last of the series this year, and have the others on order, plus picked up the WM coin at my local CS, since the mint was sold out. I like them and my son likes looking at them.

To those who do not want to pay extra for limited edition coin sets, look at the ASE proofs in 1995. The Mint made 438,511 proofs from P which average about $50-75. There was also a 10th Annv. set that year from West Point containing a ASE with a mintage of 30,125. That W-ASE goes for about $4000. Big difference don't you think? A common thought in this thread is an oz of silver is only an ounce of silver. So then a proof ASE is only an ounce of silver right? It is good news that the Mint adjusted the sales figure for the West Point set. I like the lower mintage. Also, The Mint has said that they are giving the Reverse Proof ASE a rest for a while. Plus the Mint has not said anything about producing another Enhanced finished ASE in the future. As of now, the Enhanced ASE is a one-off item and if the Mint does bring it back, the 2013 will be (and is) first year of issue coin, which will carry a higher premium. It's all supply and demand. The ASE program is very successful for the investor and the collector. This year the Mint is on par for producing the most ASE's currently at 38,428,500. The highest mintage year is 2011 with 40,020,000 ASE's produced. I do not mind buying slabbed coins, if the price is right. I have never nor intend to have coins to be submitted for grading. As a collector, I do not see the ROI by submitting coins myself. But I have noticed that coin dealers seem to have volume discounts with the coin grading companies, which makes the slabbed coins affordable.

The Buffalo nickel reissue unc had a mintage of 197K and the proof 272K. It is 5 times more expensive than the same years issue of the Capitol Visitors Center which had a mintage of almost 1/3 of that at 66K unc and 143K proof. The West Point set will have 50X the demand than that of the 5oz ATB. If you want to play the mintage figure investment game I recommend you buy the First Spouse gold coins with just about all of them with mintages under 5K.

SuperHal: I have slabs from both companies. I prefer the NGC slabs because they fit better to stack than PCGS slabs. But I prefer raw coins kept in OGP.
Some collectors believe one grader adds more value to the coin than the other, which is which I do not know.

Quote: PennyPiggy: At $155, there is at least $100 melt plus there are only 20k minted. 5 oz. AG and low mintage. Makes perfect sense. Will never be in demand like the WP Set, but you can't go too wrong with a puck. Quote: I'm not gonna pay an obscene amount on silver just because of its finish or where it was minted. I better pull my bid on that 1895 Proof Morgan, then... In one sense, a 1909-S VDB is Two Cents' worth of copper and a 1913-S T2 Buffalo is 5-6 cents worth of Cu-Ni alloy. There is such a thing as "numismatic value". Quote:The Mint has said that they are giving the Reverse Proof ASE a rest for a while. Something about die life, or lack of same... Superhal, Goldmart has the 69's for $5 less then in OGP. They also have PCGS 70's for $290 and NGC 70's for $235.
