I have a couple Morgan dollars that I've never paid too much attention. I have a 1883 S morgan that appears to have several letters in UNITED doubled. Whether it is a Mechanical Doubling or the real thing I can't tell. I will try to get some pics to show what I am talking about. I do stink on getting pics of silver though. Is there a known doubling on 1883 S morgans? I think I did pretty good with these pics- been messing around. The doubling is visible in the letters TED. Please let me know what you think. The only ones with known doubling are in the date. However, there's nothing saying a new VAM doesn't exist for that date....

It looks like a good solid DD but if there is nothing on file for them it might be nothing more then very well done Machine Doubling or possibly a new VAM. I am still learning a Lot about Morgans and VAM's so I'm curious about everyone else opinions as well.

I've just noticed that the reeding or whatever it is called on the rim above the letters IT also appear to be doubled.

To me it looks like very nice Machine Doubling as well. But I am about as far from being an expert as is possible! I would be interested to hear an opinion from Morgan_Fred or another expert. quote: Originally posted by thingee

Thingee - do you mean the denticles show signs of doubling? Are you able to post a photo showing a close up of some denticles on another section of the coin, to use as a comparison? Thanks

Thanks for your comment Snooba. Okay penticles. I didn't know that's what they are called. I'll work on getting more pics. I mean Denticles. It will have to wait until next week. I don't have time tonight and I'm going away for a few days.

Hi thingee...Dave is right, there is nothing listed for doubling other than on the date for that year. Is is possible to get a closer pic of the date and mintmark also?
I look forward to seeing the pics!

a) I'm a newbie, ignore my comments. b) What I'm seeing is a key feature of the doubling is the 'T'. Notice how the main column is doubled, but the bottom and top serifs have no doubling at all. That, plus the fact that the 'penticles' are doubled leads me to think Machine Doubling.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I really wanted to know what was going on with this Morgan and I certainly have. I have learned from all your comments. Thanks again.
