I am the highest bidder but after looking over it. I think I'm making a mistake bidding on it. The coin is HEAVY cleaned. For some reason, Liberty looks funny to me Does that mean its a cast? Forgot the link... http://www.ebay.com/itm/30100237370....m1426.l2649*added, I messaged the seller asking if the coin was cleaned, he said no.* If it's not... I think I should lay off coins.... I don't see any obvious problems with authenticity. The weight as stated is correct (8.3 grams). It doesn't look harshly cleaned, at least in the two full-face photos. There is significant remaining luster around the date and the reverse legend, consistent with an AU piece. Assuming the shipping cost isn't excessive the current bid ($352) would be an excellent price. You can always return it according to ebay policy if you determine it is a fake.

I was thinking it's cleaned because of the different color on date and around the letters. (The letters on the back, bottom left) One more thing is the scratches just look strange to me. They all go like in the same direction. So that is a reason I thought it's cleaned as well. Also the liberty is what looked strange, so that's why I started to wonder about being real.
I graded it myself around AU details. I'm not expecting to win but it's worth a shot and great to learn.
Thanks Jaobler.

I MAY have a tungsten core, but by the looks of it, I don't think so.
Send it for non destructive X Ray analysis if you are really concerned. This test can be relatively cheap, but return postage and fees would have to be considered.
Perhaps you could take it to a dealer who could do a comparative ring tone test against another Coronet Head.

Looks authentic to me. Definitely not XF as the seller states, perhaps AU. Doesn't look harshly cleaned IMO.

Looks fine to me. As noted the current price is good. Don't get carried away and bid it up over $400 though. Good luck.

Thanks for your replies.
I got outbid but I don't care. I just don't want to win that gold coin. Their is much better ones. It's really only worth melt unless it's MS.

i have to go against the current consensus and state I believe the amount of lines, on the obverse especially, show a significant cleaning. "harsh" or not, it's cleaned nonetheless and would kill any chances of a TPG Graded Slab. My thoughts on buying gold are to purchase pieces in the current price range raw and hopefully nab an MS grade from PCGS or NGC therefore doubling your investment in the current market. that having been said, and IMHO of course, hold onto your money and live to fight another day on an 1899.

@Ds, I think the guy who bought it made a huge mistake. He just paid 431 dollars for a cleaned gold coin. If it's not cleaned, the TPG would still label it because just look at all the scratches going in same directions. Cleaned = Melt value. (330 dollars)
