Oh my giddy aunt... Not a phrase that I thought I would ever use but then again if I could see into the future I would not have purchased the 2nd hand flymo that broke after a week.
Previously I had an unnecessary 'pop' at one of the guys that posted on here about a coin that, at that time, seemed to me perfectly fine - in fact, it looked like one of the best naturally toned coins I had ever seen......

As all good collectors/dealers or whatever do, I checked myself by taking good clear pictures of said coin to good friends of mine, secure in the knowledge they would back me up.
One of these guys is based in the Nottingham area and has been dealing in coins all his life, he told me flat out it was AT..... He explained a few trade secrets to me and left me feeling sad, guilty, so wrong, upset and many other things. Overly rejected but still holding out hope, I emailed the pictures to friend number two. Now this guy, is what I consider the dogs doo dahs. Guess what? AT...
Now you know when you get that feeling in your stomach when you have made a mistake that you can not reverse?
I totally apologise and admit fully I was wrong on this. I made a huge mistake, in fact, I would have probably purchased that coin myself a few days ago.
I do have one comfort.... I was quite right to say this is a place to post opinions and it has in fact turned out well for me, red face apart. Because now I have learned a very important, and 'modern' side to our coinage that I thought I knew well, but obviously don't.

Sorry guys....

Met.

Crikey, Met, that's one heck of a post...my full respect for its integrity!
I'm small-fry on here, but have been following the toning thread closely, as it's obviously a hot topic across the Net, generally!
Anyway, all things aside, hammered is where I'm truly at, but have an interest of course in all things coins!
I must post an image of an E2 BU two pence, which I antique-toned for fun...I carry it now as a charm in my wallet!
That's not to say I play around with coins to sell...more to understand the processes and possibilities of the fakers, to better my own eyes for a fraud!
I've said about dipped coins in the past that the best way to know a dipped coin is to buy some dip and dip some...you'll never ask the question 'is this dipped' again?
Hey ho! What a great forum :-)

Goodness! As ET (?!) said, kudos for coming back and letting us know Met.

I have to say, I was starting to wonder if it wasn't just a quirk of the photography! And I guess that's the problem, there are so many .. colourful coins out there that we start to see them as normal.

Anyway, it wasn't such a terrible thing and we all learned from it ... so maybe it was a good thing, in the end?

Big post Met.
Interesting debate as it should be.
Thankfully all toys remain in everyone's own pram.

I think we ought to start a thread on drugs in sport.
The best examples there have come out of China,Eastern block and more recently from certain North American science labs.

Well done Met, not easy to do! Everyone I have discussed it with on other forums are convinced it's clearly AT too, it's just not something that would normally survive numismatic scrutiny if sold on the British side of the pond (as Peter says).

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder (of course), to me extreme rainbow toning leaves me running for the hills!

Forums like this are invaluable, else where would we be? :)
