How can you tell if incuse lettering is doubled die or machine doubled? And which do you think this quarter is? Thanks, Bill.

Ahhhhh the Denali.... What Mint mark is this coin? If it is the Denver version, I have a whole roll of the potential doubled date and "EPU".

I posted one a while back on this forum;
https://goccf.com/t/155859

Under a good light and magnification, take a look at the areas that looked doubled. I have seen a TON of Denali's that show extreme Machine Doubling, or what appears like a scraping which makes the coin looked doubled when it is not. Machine Doubling looks like a payloader takes a chunk out of the side of the coin in the area where there may be doubling.

I have a few of coins that appear to be doubled but John Wexler offered an opinion that matched what Coop said, and with two well known and established collectors saying the same thing, its more than likely not a true doubled die. Coins have been under a new way of being struck since the mid 90's I believe, and DDO's and DDR's are out there, but they are in extremely rare cases.

You CAN send it in for attribution, grading and slabbing, but the problem is that the graing service typically has to acknowledge the variety or error first. ANACS seems like a compnay that is wiling to jump in and call it as they see it, and the most reluctant seems to be NGC, in my opinion.

Die movement during the strike affects the devices differently. On raised devices, it tends to reduce the overall size of the devices. On the incuse devices, it enlarges the devices like your coin. I love the look of it in the images, but knowing they are incuse just makes it a machine doubled example. Keep looking. Doubled dies are out there.
