1880 Swiss 10 rappen - this was the second year of issue of this design, and the coin is still struck to this day in the same metal composition and with the same design - a world record!  |

In 1880 Belgium celebrated the 50th anniversary of its independence. A special issue of silver 2 francs and 1 franc coins featuring both the late King Leopold I and Leopold II are on the obverse. Though not rare, both coins have circulated for about 35 years and are hard to find in a decent grade. 2 Francs:   |

At the 1880 World Exhibition in Brussels, The Royal Mint opened a workshop where commemorative medals were minted in front of the public. To avoid them being used as currency (as had happened before), the silver medal though equal in size to the 5 francs coin, was sold for 5,50 F. The bronze medals were minted using the same dies and were sold for 25 centimes. A quarter franc used to be a tiny silver coin (the size of a Half Dime) before. The bronze medal, 37 mm and 25 g (mintage 27841) is not common and the silver one (6714) is even rare. One single gold medal was offered to the King, but rumors go it has a couple of unofficial brethern. One of the 1880 bronze medals:  |

A Dutch 2 1/2 cents to end the day with. This always seemed a peculiar face value. But it made sense while there were Half Cents around.  |
