By the end of the 1870's several silver mines in the SW states and in Mexico started up and silver prices were sliding gradually. In the Latin monetary union, this put an end to bimetallism (the concurrent use of silver and gold coinage). The coining of large 5 Francs / 5 Lire was reduced and suspended eventually. Smaller denominations were continued and were tacidly assumed still to be worth their face value. Below the very last 5 Lire issued in 1878 under King Vittorio Emmanuele II.  In Italy, Umberto I was crowned in 1878 and 5 Lire coins were issued only a few more years. The US conitinued cranking up the production of Morgan dollars, while their metal value eventually slid to about 30 cents. |
