...and another-! This one from the Lyon mint (D): Actual size = 23mm. Now if two more show up with 'L' and 'R', we can spell 'liard' with mintmarks!

I'm afraid 1653 is a bit late for me. The last of my coins dates from some time after February 1647 up until around the beginning of 1649. However I do have one of these replicas! It's a shilling and was issued by the Parliamentary authorities at the end of the English civil war in the name of The Commonwealth. Interestingly, perhaps in line with the Protestant 'no Popery' sentiment of the time, the legends are in English rather than the more usual Latin. Bit of a cheat I know. But until someone comes up with the real thing at least we've something for the year ...

Thanks for posting, need to let 'jbuck' make a call on that one. There are a few waiting to post a 1652, perhaps someone else has a few pieces from those times.

Yes, I'm happy to delete it if anyone objects Medieval.
I felt it might qualify (and help the thread move on!) in that I do own one (though the image is from the manufacturer's site) and it is dated the correct year. However my coins were all issued in the King's name, so both earlier and dated by privy mark only ...

No need to delete, the question is if 'jbuck' accepts it as a valid entry. And any way of dating is accepted as long as it nails the coin to the year in a reasonable way.

Quote: Ironically, this coin was posted on the original thread. Nope - the coin shown there is a Sixpence, not a Shilling.
