Sadly, I do not yet have any semicentennial Panama coins, but I do have some Panamanian coins to post for 1904 and 1947 I am hoping to complete a Panama type set - it's like U.S. coins, but much more interesting! El Salvador, 25 centavos, 1953 A junk bin silver find from my holiday to Montreal - 20 cents! Sorry, Giles. I wasn't expecting it to be silver - by the 50s, most Latin American countries, despite their large production of it, had taken silver out of their fractional coins due to inflation. Hey, maybe precious metals aren't all they're cracked up to be. Anyway, El Salvador was an exception to the rule, still holding on in 1953. Sure, this coin is 3 times smaller than the 1944 25 centavos, but at least they weren't out of the race yet! The colon is still worth about 12 cents, now pegged to the U.S. dollar, making it perhaps the second least-inflationary Latin American currency.

Lebanon, 50 piastres, 1952 I went to the Lebanese Festival in Halifax this year and I remember waiting in line for some kind of Mediterranean food. I had an existential crisis - there was one thing on the menu! What if I didn't like it? There were pink things in it!! I almost had a breakdown as I waited to meet my inevitable destiny. I ended up enjoying it, though (the pink things were turnips). Anyway, I think this was the only silver issued by the Lebanese Republic.

Great Britain 1952 set of circulating coins. Only the farthing, halfpenny, threepence and sixpence were issued for circulation, and the sixpence is quite scarce, with a mintage of about 1 million. Single specimens exist of a 1952 halfcrown and penny, and some reference books also state that two 1952 English shillings exist. Presumably after the death of King George VI The Royal Mint started concentrating on getting the new Elizabeth II coins ready.

A colonial 5 Francs in brass is my pick for 1952. It was minted for circulation in Belgian Congo and for Ruanda and Urundi (now Burundi). The last large (26.5 mmm) and nice looking 5 Francs coin issued (during the last few years before independence only aluminum coinage was circulated). http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces11003.htmlDespite its mintage it is not too common.

Here's one from the country the USA loves to hate. You can't sell coins on ebay with the name of this country in the title unless you spell it like this: (uba Be envious of the Canadians with their common sense attitude. Commemorative coinage is somewhat of a State cottage industry in Cuba. 20th century Krause has twenty pages of stuff you can't collect from the USA. Various forms of this USA-25c-size silver coin shown below date back to 1915. Most of them make regular appearances in bullion buckets due to the high tourist traffic between the two countries before the gates to this island playground were closed tight. CUBA 1952 20 centavos; 0.900 silver; 23mm; mintage= 8.7 mil. : Quote: Sadly, I do not yet have any semicentennial Panama coins I passed up a Medio Balboa in the junk tub tonight because it was f-vf and I already have one much better. Be glad to pluck it for ya if it's still there next time I go back. Quote: I like big silver. South Africa 1952 five shilling What's not to like? That 'Founding of Capetown' piece has eluded me so far. . .

I got many of my Cuban coins from a Serbian friend. She still goes there every summer... the ebay situation is even more irritating with 1ranian coins Quote: I passed up a Medio Balboa in the junk tub tonight because it was f-vf and I already have one much better. Be glad to pluck it for ya if it's still there next time I go back. That would be excellent, but I don't know how I could pay you... I could probably grab some Canadian silver next time I go into town...

Here's a nice piece of low-quality silver for 1951! Mexico, 25 centavos, 1951 In the 50s, Mexico couldn't decide whether or not it wanted 20 centavo or 25 centavo coins in circulation, and started producing these beauties. The denomination lost in the end: the copper-nickel 25 centavo coin was out of use by the 70s, while the 20 centavo coin was still being minted. This is part of the short-lived Mexican .300 silver series, bridging the gap between still-respectable .500 purity and the infamous .100 silver pesos. When I bought it, I had found it in the 12/$1 box and (since I didn't know as much then) wasn't even sure it was silver! I almost considered throwing it back. Luckily, I stuck it through to the very end and now have this coin to show for it. Interestingly, low-purity silver often picks up a green tinge.
