ASLAN, I was talking about Hitler using popular figures in Germany to bolster his own popularity when I made that comment. His other actions, and decisions to take the lead in everything, etc., are for a different debate. He put Paul von Hindenburg on coins because he knew people liked von Hindenburg. That's not a bad move if you're trying to look like the good guy. My personal opinion of the man is that he was a sick man, an evil man, and actually very clever in a lot of respects, but his absolute power corrupted absolutely. Thankfully. If it hadn't, the world would quite possibly be a very different place. The coins his Reich created are so full of history though, which I agree wholeheartedly with, and I also agree that this is a nice place to discuss that, as long as we keep it in the context of the posts and keep the coin thread moving along at a good pace. I don't have anything interesting to show for several more coin years, so I will be content enjoying the posts others put up in the meantime.

France 1938 20 Francs: Designed by P Turin, this 35mm, 20-gram 68% silver coin must have been one of the largest circulating coins of the period. It was struck from 1929 to 1939 - the last date of issue is extremely rare - only about 20 specimens known to exist according to the Victor Gadoury catalogue. After WW2 a smaller cupro-nickel pattern with the same design was struck but never issued: the next 20F for circulation was the small aluminium-bronze coin of 1950.

A silver 2 Kronor from Sweden (31 mm). http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces12990.htmlSwedish silver coins had a 0.800 fineness before WW II. From 1962 onwards, 10, 25 and 50 Ã-re were minted in copper-nickel. Until 1968 the Swedish mint continued minting 1 and 2 Kronor coins (and commemorative 5's) using a poor 0.400 silver alloy.

A Guernsey 8 Doubles. I found a little history on the coin from Wikipedia, so take it with a grain of salt. For some reason the spelling of Guernsey on the coin is Guernesey and features the island's coat of arms. The denomination "doubles" is based on the French Franc, which was legal currency on the island until 1921. A double was worth 1/80 of a Franc and the 8 doubles coin was known as the Guernsey penny.

IMO ... I agree with the OP ... your getting away from what this thread is about.
Each day post coins for one year. The next day move on to the next year.
Nice hearing coin history ... but general history is again .. not what this thread is about.
When getting that to far from this threads intent .. a new post/thread should be started

Also agree, I love going through this thread, from year to year, coin to coin back through history.
I could do without the editorial commentary interrupting my coin viewing. Perhaps since this " is " jbuck's thread and he does have the " power " he can edit out the editorials (including this one) so that he can get his thread back and we can go back to a seamless coin viewing thread ?

I wish I could capture the real color this nickel has. It has some very nice eye appealing color. 1938S Jefferson

Just tried taking a picture with different light. The pictures aren't that better, but I am glad I did. Now I can see some PVC on my 38D half .. I will take care of that next 1938 Denver coins. They minted two nickels that year ... but no quarters.
