Panama, 5 centesimos, 1904. Despite being 5 cents, this coin is the size of a U.S. dime. In 1904, Panama had just seceded from Colombia with heavy U.S. intervention (so, this is the last Panamanian coin we'll see in this thread, unless someone posts another 1904 issue or a fantastically rare Panamanian silver cob). Silver prices were so low that a dollar didn't even contain 50 cents worth of silver, so it was decided that every Panamanian coin should contain twice as much silver than the U.S. equivalent in order to impress the world with the new country's coins. So, the 50-centesimo coin of 1904 was the size of a silver dollar (unfortunately, there was no issue of an enormous double-sized 1 balboa coin). But it ended in tears: silver prices went back up and most of these wonderful silver coins left the country (probably bound for America) to be melted down. Nowadays they are the very rarest of Panama's coins, but still affordable (I have been considering a 50-centesimo coin in G condition for $40).

Quote: unless someone posts another 1904 issue Happy to oblige These aren't exactly common but they do show up in the tubs now & then. I have the 50c. version around here 'somewhere' but it doesn't seem to want to join the group photo. Still missing the 25c.
