1903 PHILIPPINES 50 CENTAVOS; 0.900 silver; 30mm; mintage= 3.1 mil. : 1903-S PHILIPPINES ONE PESO; 0.900 silver; 38mm; mintage= 11,361,000: 1903 was the first year for USA-administered Philippine coinage. IMHO, this is one of the all-time great coin designs, 5 stars for attractiveness. The peso shown above was a San Francisco mint product. 50 centavos were also minted in S.F. but only two are known. What became of the rest ? In 1907 the peso was downsized and the silver content reduced to 0.800.

davidrj, that's an interesting variety--how much rarer is the open 3 type?

I think the open 3 was 1st reported in 1969, V R Court's survey of pennies in circulation prior to decimalisation (Coin Monthly Aug 1972) only found 5 in 2,866 1903 pennies - suggesting a mintage of about 37,000. The books all say not known in grades higher than GF - mine is probably one of the best known - not bad for 45p & postage David

NO ! ! ! I missed it by that much I forgot to post my line of half pennies from back in 1938 and 1935, the next one should have been in 1903. Just too busy with coin roll hunting and snow removal, I'll be more ready for "How far back can we go? THIRD Edition!" This tread is really a great motivator to get good pictures of all of my coins, I still need to work on my camera set-up thou.
