Listed as a lion walking right with an R above and from 300BC.

It took a while to ID, but its actually Juno Sospita/bull walking right with an R above as a control mark. The gens is Thoria and htis is issued by L. Thorius Balbus. The R mark seems quite rare.

Issued in 105BC and made its way to England, perhaps with Caesar's invasion, perhaps by trade, perhaps with the large scale romanisation. Romans captured Britain in 43AD, 148 years later.

That lion's looking more cocker spaniel-ish to me.
Cool piece!

Hi Ben,

You have that down as British found, just out of interest you got any more details than that? I like British found gear, as you well know!

Well, talking to the guy, I'm not sure if it is. Apparently bought in a huge lot from a detectorist in the 90s. I'm going to get a name or a find locality or I dont see a reason to believe him.

It is possible Ben, I have seen stuff like that turned up by the lads in the past! In fact, it is pretty amazing what Roman coinage does turn up in Southern England. Was just interested in the place really

My other republican thing is a fourree found by Winchester by one Oliver Maggard Esq. (RIP) some time ago (the 70s I believe). Its all written on the flip - hopefully ill be able to find some cheap collectors tickets to write it onto. That one is even earlier than this one!
