That looks potentially like a pattern / test but I'm not an expert in this field.

It appears to be a trial strike as gxseries noted. By he look of it the quality makes it seem legit. I would send it for certification, if it passes you have quite a gem on your hands. The market for Venezuelan numismatics is quite strong.

Numismat, Do you mean get it certified as to send it to a TPG?

Ditto everything Numismat said... and the shield does look exact and proper. Compare to this similar (though earlier) trial for a Santiago Chile colonial 8R from just yesterday in the Sedwick auction: http://www.icollector.com/Santiago-...13_i17425483

It would be unlikely to have a mintage of such pattern.
The important thing is to verify the authencity of this piece that you have.

Oh my! Great pick This probably could have been certified... but I am very glad for your hugely enriching auction. Once it sells and ships, care to let on how much you made?

Congrats, that price is in line with how the Venezuelan numismatic market is for such rarities. Though you probably could have gotten a couple grand more if it were in a PCGS slab. There would have been no problem getting an MS-65 grade on it.

Thanks. I thought it would be around $500 on a good day. The thing is, I did send it to PCGS, they called it Genuine but they wouldn't put it in a holder for some reason. If I knew it was worth this much I would have sent it to NGC or gotten a reason from PCGS.

Yea the TPG's can be funny when it comes to the more esoteric stuff. But either way congrats on the big haul. :)

I WOULD NOT ebay this piece, unless you really needs lots of money. There is a great risk that the ebay market will not appreciate it's potential value, or those who do recognize it's value will not be lucky enough to see it offered. It really should have gone to formal specialist numismatic auction, where the correct numismatic market would have more easily found it.
