Good question!

Just got a $25.00 box, Fed wrapped and have gone through half. I can not believe all the bad, zinc rot coins. This is so unusual to me, being a devoted cent hunter. Way beyond the norm. Also a more than normal amount of Canadian penny's. Which is ok living in MI but,
is there advantage for spending Canadian penny's in the US?
With the OP get rid of them before they disintegrate. The banks don't.

I think you SHOULD be LEGALLY allowed to "melt" down zincolns that are so bad (copper plating worn off and oxcidzing) for their metal value. I mean, with a coin in that shape, which IS useless, why not let people hyst recycle them and preserve that metal content?

I usually toss them in the console ashtray and spend an extra 3 cents on fuel each, hauling them around for the next 6 months.

I just keep them for now. I would spend them if I had to.

If I were you, just spend them.

if it's not too many and they are really nasty I throw them in the garbage as a courtesy to the next person who looks through the coins. I know the bank certainly doesn't so someone has to I figure. I've gotten some nasty coins that I didn't even want to touch before. ewwww.

Last 4 or 5 years I have thrown all my Lincoln's into a box. After reading about the 1983 copper's I decided to go through
them, around 40lbs.About halfway through them now.Seperating out the copper from zinc,1982 into seperate pile for weighing.
Some interesting finds, but nothing special so far.

I don't keep any of them, clean, dirty, nice or ugly. I roll them or spend them or whatever. I already have the ones I want for my Lincoln sets.
Rest in Peace

There has been an '84 copper, and a later date as well (1987 I believe) that have been found.

Planchets get hung up in the presses and elsewhere and get back into the production stream.

My memory letting me down right now. I believe lots of the '84's have been found and a single later date. The later date was actually found in change by one of the more famous error experts. There are probably dozens of the '83 known and many more in circulation.

Whats the best way to distinguish between the copper and zinc cents? I have 82 and 83`s that look very similar. I am into the older cents and have never messed with the LMC`s, but with errors etc., I may have to start checking them closer.
