Seller has been on ebay since 2000. Rating is over 50, but the last feedback was in 2003. They are selling a fairly high dollar coin, around $1400. I have asked for additional photos, which they posted and were polite and responsive.

I may just ask them why they haven't sold anything for a decade. The coin is a pretty good deal and they offer returns sooooo. Part of me is thinking that if I buy it and they never send it then I will get my money back anyway so maybe I am protected. It just seems odd, but my interactions thus far make me think they are legit.

My question is there a way to tell if the account has been hijacked?

No way for you to tell, but ebay might be able to. Trouble is, people move , change IP's, bank accounts, etc. The evidence might not be conclusive unless the new "owner" is overseas or something.

Ask the question. For a high-dollar coin aa their first sale in a decade, it's not unreasonable. And protect yourself via credit card.

Call the Seller and talk to him. If you are still uncomfortable then don't proceed. If you do make the deal make sure you only pay through ebay / PayPal approved payment methods. You never are 100% "covered" but following the rules helps if something goes wrong. Good luck!

I had a good friend on eBsy who was disabled. A group of us got together on his birthday one year and bought him a rare Matchbox VW Bus for about $200.

About 3 years after he died, I signed on to ebay and saw the bus listed for sale at $150 under HIS user account.

I jumped on the forum we knew him from and everybody went nuts! We all contacted ebay and ebay said that the account owner was the seller and there was no reason to pull the sale.

We all started sending the seller terrible questions about "how he could sell the VW Bus if he was DEAD?!?"

He sent out a message on the forum to all of use.

SHE told us that she was his girlfriend and room mate of our friend selling the bus because seeing it everyday made her feel so sad.

We all wound up feeling like real jerks. One of the guys bought it back from her and we got to talk with her for a few weeks before she cancelled the forum account.

It was nice to talk to her, but she was still so sad that she just couldn't keep it or keep talking to us,

I remember feeling so MAD that someone had hacked his ebay account and somehow found out that he had the rare bus and then had the guts to sell something under our good friend's name that he didn't even own.

Some of the messages we sent were MUCH less than nice. So they she about 20 messages calling her (we thought it was a guy) some of the worst names you can think of.

We all wanted to disappear and told her how sorry we were, but I don't think she'll ever forget how bad we treated her, until she told us who she was.

We all had to make sure we posted that it was okay for her to sell it and that she was NOT any of the things we had called her.

Nothing like that has happened to me again, but I will double check everything before joining in on a group of guys putting our feet in our mouths like that again.

Just walk. It's that easy.
