I am trying to decide if I should break this out and re-submit....what do you think (the small red mark around the eye is actually inside the holder not on the coin, but there is a small smudge on the coin lower eye). What would you grade this at? Edited by Docbink 11/02/2013 08:45 am

I almost don't even want to hazard a guess with these pics... Very difficult to see whats actually going on with the coin with the angle and light.. If I had to guess it'd be a blind guess.... As I can't really see the surfaces of the coin. Uummm... MS-64.. But I would definitely like to see some better pics...
Before cracking it you have to remember that 1881-s is one of the dates/mints known for a superior strike and excellant quality. This date/mint is commonly found in high, high grades with great strikes.... So the third party graders are especially tough on low-mid MS grades. Alot get graded less than many believe they should because of this.. Just food for thought.

Not sure if these pics are much better....It still bothers me they got a red piece of dust or lint inside the slab.

Higher end 64. This date comes very, very nice so you need to have a pretty dang solid coin to break into the higher grades.

MS 64, looks like slight cleaning around in god. Might get MS65 but I would say that's max especially for the year. I don't think it's worth breaking it out, especially if you already payed once to have it graded

The strike is a touch weak on this one, evidenced above the ear and on the eagles breast feathers. I don't think this would go higher than a MS64, 1881-S not worth slabbing fees unless it makes it into a MS66 or better holder in my mind.
Edit to say I'll bet this is sitting in a PCGS MS65 holder, I still think it's a MS64 at best.

MIght have snuck into a 65 slab but technically I don't think it's better than MS-64 so I will say 64

I am not a slab fan, but having said that, I think that the possible benefits of a higher grade are not worth the extra cost of a re slab. Most probably, it should come back at the grade it has already been rated at. I am thinking MS63 or 4.

I can see it as a 65 but if you are hoping for a 66, and that is the reason to resubmit, then don't do it. It does not look close to 66 and as others have noted, it honestly looks 64+ in the images. Call them about the red speck if it really bothers you.

Not to mention, this may be the most common single Morgan in MS66 - the TPG's (PCGS and NGC) have graded over 25,000 between them - and it's one of the least-expensive 66's as a result.
