Just a guess, but it looks as if that area of the coin took a nasty hit and damaged the last 5 many years ago.

The color of the damaged area matches the rest of the coin because the 5 could have been damaged as far back as 1955, so it toned over the same number of years as the rest of the coin.

If the area of damage had any sharp points, they would have worn away as the coin circulated.

Now lets let the experts give the right answer.

I agree it may have been damaged. It I s a Wheat cent correct? Almost looked like a 1959 with the distorted last digit?
