I can see tripling on some devices. What type of error is this?

If Mechanical Doubling caused the tripling would it be called something else?

Coop will chime in, I am sure, but Machine Doubling can look like just about anything, Its important to note that if the devices are the same or smaller/ reduced, Machine Doubling is suspect. In order for it to be a DDO or better, the devices need to be thicker or duplicated at or near the same height as the original letters and numbers.

To me, the bottom of the "L" looks like classic Machine Doubling. I use the analogy of a bucket loader cutting onto a side of a number or letter, and it leaves that shelved or uneven look, sometimes almost fuzzy.

It probably wouldn't make this a plus for a coin to have Machine Doubling. But it is still a BU 40% silver coin. The best place to check for doubled dies on this series is on the Motto. I've found several that is doubled/tripled in this area.

I have several photographs of the coin but I did not have time to load them all. I will add them so you guys can see what I am talking about. Coop, Last night I read that the issues that cause Mechanical Doubling could also cause heavy vibrations after the coin is struck and that is what causes this effect. Was that good information?

When looking at areas around the bust I can see multiple flat layers stacked tightly on one another. The lighting in my photographs could be better.

I removed this coin from it's Special Mint Set cover earlier this evening. I noticed a section of Kennedy's cheek was missing and decided to find another 1966 set for my collection. This coin is beat up pretty bad.

I've never heard of the vibration issues. The machine is not holding the dies firmly. But the SMS/Proof coins are struck more than once. So if there is a light misalignment it shows up on the coins as Machine Doubling. (I refer to it as Machine Doubling, as it is caused by a machine and not a mechanical.) It is the term I've always used.

Here is what to look for in the Motto areas on Kennedy halves:

I know this is not a proof coin, but the Motto doubling would look like that as well.
