Took a phone video to best capture the coin.

Am I right about the ridges in the edge that I point out?

My guess...those markings are leftovers from where this coin was mounted in a pendant. The pendant was brought into a "we buy gold" place and the scrapped the gold part of the pendant and just spent the dollar.

The part of the die that makes the edge/edge letters is three pieces.
Where you see the raised lines is where those three pieces come together.

I am sure the CCF experts can say that better.

I have read where some have found, the section were out of order and the letters/date were in different sequence.

The proofs are made with a segmented collar which leaves three raised ridges on the edge 120 degrees apart. The business strikes use a different type edge die and the edge on those are applied as a separate step.

The proof dollar known with the edge segments out of order occurred on the proof Jefferson. After that they changed the shape of the segments so they couldn't be installed out of order.

The one with the wrong date was a business strike, I believe it was W H Harrison. The Harrisons were being struck at the end of 2008 at the same time as the Van Buren. Edge dies of both dates were in use at the same time and some were sent to the wrong line.

Thanks for posting the info for a dollar with the wrong date.

Could not find a Harrison with wrong date, but did find this link.

A Taylor dollar, found in a roll of Sac dollars. It should have 2009 date but has 2010.

Another coin to watch out for.

OK I was going by memory and I guess I got the president wrong. Method of manufacture should still be about the same though.
