The current nickel is ugly. There is no question of this. US coinage should use silhouettes, not front views. Could they have found a less flattering view of Jefferson? Nickels are among my favorite coins: the Shield nickel, the V nickel, Buffalo nickel, and the original Jefferson nickel. For the mint to replace an attractive design with this monstrosity is gross and sickening. Bring back the old Jefferson nickel. This being said, I do like the buffalo reverse on the short-lived mid-2000s nickel, and the obverse wasn't as bad as the current nickel.

Am I the only one who hates the obverse of this coin?

Your among possibly the largest portion of coin collectors. Nickels are, from what I've seen, the least collected coins. Yes there are some that like them, but far from the majority of collectors. Which is why all you need to complete an Album is just buy a large quantity of rolls of them and go through them. And poof, you'll have a fairly decent completed set.

A lot of people said the same thing you are about the Shield nickel when it was in circulation. I'm sure after the next design, someone will come up saying, how we missed that design and list the older designs as well in the future.

The rendition of Jefferson is very good, its very close to known depictions of Jefferson. I don't have any complaints about it, but I would like the mint to go back to the education-type reverses.

There are so many aspects of Jefferson's life, they could do special reverses like they did a few years ago with the Louis and Clark reverses but keep this 2006 obverse.

Maybe they could do one with Sally Hemings on the reverse.

I agree, I don't like it much either. The portrait is just weird how it faces forward. Liked the old one better...

How is the Jefferson/Sally Hemmings episode in any form something to be celebrated on coinage?

One thing I truely don't understand....why do we even put presidents on currency anyway? I could maybe see doing it for one year on the year a president passes away, but otherwise....this country was established to NOT deify our leaders...they aren't kings, queens, gods, or to be venerated in any similar way...presidents are simply citizens serving the rest of us. I think we need to take presidents off of all our currency, notes included, and stop venerating our elected leaders. Bring back lady liberty! As for the OP...ya...the current Nicole is horrible...not just in the design, but in the fact it has almost no relief to it...is almost 2D

I wish Liberty were still on our coins. Early 20th century coins are my favorites. A hot, updated version of Liberty would be really cool.

I like the current nickel better than the old one. It's a refreshing take on the "same old" design - a random face profile on the obverse, and something else on the reverse. That describes the vast majority of US coinage through the years, but not this nickel.

I like the new design. Ugliest coin, it is not, in my opinion.

Gives us something to think about, a different side to Jefferson.

I like the current design as well. I try and collect proof rolls of nickels when I can... and what was said is correct - if you collect nickels you are in the minority...which is fine by me. :)

If you do roll searching you can really get into it and actually accumulate a pretty nice set. I did that and constantly was upgrading as I was doing box after box. Never found a single buff or War Nickel though.

I'm fine with the design... the nickels are my coins to favorite (for Americans). I know my parents hate the design, they though Jefferson was a zombie...

I think the new pennies are terrible. They look like a melted ice sculpture, almost zero detail and most times even the letters are in pencil thin script. They look like they were poured, not stamped. The nickles to me at least have clean lines.
