This is not my coin, but one that I saw recently sell. What are people's thoughts on the authenticity of this? I have my opinion, but I'd like some other insight.

There us a thread on this topic, where you may compare the finding with your coin.

Thanks; but, this is not my coin. It is a coin that sold at a "reputable" British auction about 2 months ago. I wanted to get opinions on this specific coin from others, not compare it to others. I already know what I think about it, I wanted to hear some feedback from others. Thanks though.

Definitely fake. A most likely chinese counterfeit looks like a perhaps cast coin. At least it wasn't as high quality as fakes struck from dies created by electrolysis? from genuine coins these are the ones to be aware of. Anyway there are a number of reasons that I found particularly the coat is not completed as seen that it comes quite short of the rim and the lack of detail cannot be justified by the wear after looking at other Very Fine coins which had just as much wear but significantly more detail. Also the weakness on the striking of the rider's hand is a notorious indicator of a fake while the weak details on the horse and king's cloak also supports it being fake.

Lastly these coins had a value of two shillings but were sold for three shillings to support the celebrations making low grade examples much much scarcer than high grade examples as people set them aside as a shilling was worth quite a bit back then

I agree with you 100%, for the same reasons you list. What annoyed me about this particular coin is that it was offered by a supposedly "respected" London Coin dealer -- and quite frankly, it is one of the worst fakes I have seen around.

Here's the original picture from their auction:

And, here's the link to the auction which took place on August 31, 2013. It was described as only "Australia Florin 1934 Melbourne KM#33 Near Fine/Fine and scarce". If the coin site affiliated with CGS can't spot a fake this poor that makes me really wonder who is reviewing their lots...

And, just another pet peeve of mine, but is a coin with a mintage of 54,000 -- most of which were hoarded -- with many available in aUNC/UNC really "scarce"?

I agree entirely it is poor and who ever bought it should try and get their money back from them it is a pretty poor fake also the sporadic toning around V King and the last R of Emperor only make it more suspicious and the letters fade into the fields the closer they get to the rim meaning it was weakly struck probably from medal presses if dies were used M of Melbourne for that by the way if they are reading this I would happily offer my services as a reviewer of Australian coins if you need help anyway if a 17 year old can tell if a coin is a fake it is a pretty poor effort.
