Well, damaged most certainly. Someone decided to take a blade to the obverse side of the rim as well as scratch out Liberty. An invading redcoat that got a little bored?

This would likely grade Good Details - Damaged. It has nice details though. This type is extremely difficult to find and this piece was actually affordable (and its not corroded!). First Classic Head that went into my Dansco 7099. Small date variety.

That's intriguing! Who would go the trouble to deliberately scratch out the name of Liberty? Even if you're dedicated to overthrowing the US government, you're not likely to oppose Happiness, or Motherhood.

Perhaps, the culprit was an avid abolitionist, making a political statement?

Then too, it might have been etched by an irate Englishman who invaded Washington, D.C. in 1812 ... the mind reels!
