I'll post pics on monday that I have taken myself ... but I bought this dime and think it may be a proof issue that's been lightly circulated. Now ... I know the pictures kinda suck ... but I've spent several hours over the past few days looking at proofs in slabs ... and frankly, some of them look like nice frosty business strikes to me. There's no diagnostic that I've been able to find. No die gouges, etc. that give it away. What I base my instinct on is the strength and clarity of the designer's initials and basically all of the legends, obverse and reverse....and the apparent lack of a frosty appearance. What'cha think? If it's not... I ain't hurt at 3.50 shipped. If you can see a definite reason why it's not, please enlighten me. Chance Edited by Chancellor Sutler 11/03/2013 01:37 am

Polished business strike. Rims aren't square enough for me.

That's another thing I studied on slabbed examples, and some are more squared, while some are quite rounded. I tried to narrow my determination via that characteristic, but "no can do".
I'm not saying you're not right ... just that I was unable to nail that down as an "etched in stone" characteristic. The "break" from the inner perimeter of the rim (where it meets the field) does look softer than most of the proofs though.

Business strike.... Bands aren't strong and separated as on most others I've seen. Just my opinion.... but for $3.50 it was worth the gamble.

In my opinion I agree with business strike.
After westernsky brought out that point that put the cherry on top of my decision.

You can have a dime with proof like appearance, but more of a frosted look to it, I got few 40's Denver dimes that I think have a better strike than Philadelphia proof. The one pictured appears polished, perhaps better pictures if you can.

It should arrive tomorrow. I intend to take better pictures when it gets here. I had to really work to bring out the detail in these pics, which were offered by the seller. Some of the proofs appear polished, others don't. Its really pretty confusing looking at pictures of varying quality, taken by people of varying skill levels.

Probably not a proof but for what you paid, makes no difference. Nice coin and really nice price.

I had a 1939 proof come my way once, in a band-aid box full of mercs that I bought from a guy who had dug 9 quart jars of silver coins (newest was 1942) in his garage. That was a lot of fun. I spent about 1500 dollars with the guy, and was buying rolls of walkers for 50 bucks ... but Clinton was president, so it wasn't yesterday. I was driving home, which was a couple hour drive ... in my 57 Buick Special, looking through the walkers. I noticed a 1921 ... and stuck it in my shirt pocket simply because I'd seen no others with that date. It was the Denver issue, in VF-30. But the only Mercury dime of note in that little can, was a 1939 proof that somebody had placed in circulation. I bookmarked one on ebay this evening that looks as though it were struck, rotated about 30 degrees and struck again. The first strike is but a shadow, but I'm nearly certain that's what it is. My new dime album arrives tomorrow too. I decided that I'll work on the silver roosevelt set in the second tier set, but only adding coins I've dug in my metal detecting hobby. That will make for slow going. I only found 2 this year. I need new places to go though. I've hammered the daylights out of this little town, harvesting over 250 silver coins... and the 2 I dug this year came from a neighboring town. Chance

It arrived ... and it's just a business strike with a troublesome spot of corrosion over the tip of the wing and into the field. No need to photograph it really. I have to take the Mrs to the Doc's in a little while. I may post a pic later. It was worth the gamble. I don't buy lottery tickets, so I think of it as cheap entertainment.

Definitely worth a shot especially for what you paid for it. Hopefully you won't be making lemonade out of the next one, eh?

It wasn't much of a gamble ... and admittedly a long shot. Funniest thing though ... I went to Lowe's to buy a faucet for my bathroom sink this evening and went to get some change out of my left pants pocket ... the one my pocket change always goes into. I found a 1941-S merc in my change ... that I'd apparently gotten earlier in the day at the little Mom and Pop Grocery downtown. They've been known to give obsolete silver coins in change before. My step-son got a decent 1926 Standing Liberty quarter in change there about 8 years ago. None of the cashiers there give a hoot about older designs showing up. If it says "one dime" ... its a dime.
