I thought I would share an update on my progress with the Dansco 7099. It all started when I decided to tackle a nice large cent date set in an eye appealing album. I should have done my research before buying the 7099. In retrospect, it would have been better to buy blank pages with the correct mm size holes and just enough spaces for a true date set in a generic Dansco album. Some days I think about just quitting and liquidating what I have put together so far, but everytime I get the album out and look at it I think how cool it would be to see it complete (or, at least complete except for the first two pages, because that's nigh impossible).

Here are the two pages of braided hair large cents of my collection. I have only 6 holes remaining to be filled. I have a bunch of coronet heads as well, but that section has a lot more holes that need to be filled before it will look right for posting. Is anybody feeling the challenge of this album? My coins are all circulated, varying grades, some with minor damage, but I have avoided ones with corrosion.

Great progress so far! Would be quite a feat to complete that bad boy. About impossible, as you said.

I agree. You have a very good start. On some of the holes though, the holes are bigger than the coins. Do you know why this is?

Known problem with the 7099. All the holes are too big.

Not to my knowledge. There are also two erroneous holes for coins that don't exist and one of the 1834 types has a typo that causes confusion.

I've filled in the extra holes with foam as well as the 1804 hole. I am not really focusing on the 1793-1795 types either.

You would think they would look at it a little closer before releasing it. My Mercury dime album (7123) has an error in the description of the coin on the front back cover. It is supposed to say "the mints include Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. Instead it says "they mints include Philadelphia,Denver, and San Francisco". I cracked up the first time I saw that mistake!

That's a pretty good start on your set. I'm a bit further along but don't see much chance of completing it either. I have 80 of the 97 coins needed that range from details coins through EF. The tough ones I'm missing are all 3 of the 1793's 1799 & 1804. I have every other year just not all the required varieties. I do have both kinds of 1796 & 1857 large and small dates though. The 17 holes in my album, for now, are filled with colonials like Woods Hibernia, King George 1 2 & 3 halfpennies, Nova Constellatio and state coinage. I filled the last page that only has the 1857 small date with 1785-88 CT coppers.

Talk about "job creep."

"Hmmm. I'll do Large Cents next. Date set, no worries about Mint Marks, pretty straightforward. Let's order the Dansco."

Then, when the album arrives,

I tried to do the Dansco and hit the (there is no such coin) wall. Soooooooo I sold my 7099 to a Forum member, bought the Whitman and sold off the year multiples. Never regretted that decision. PG

So if you want to do a date set the idea of buying the blank pages is a good one. It will still be a very challenging set but possible for a lot more people because you get rid the three very expensive coins. Of course that still leves three costly ones.

There is one piece that keeps me from being able to do the 7099, the 93 cap. That is a coin I never expect to own. Of course I own several pieces I never thought I'd own so you never know.
