I think it's just due to the wear.
Look at the letters in CANADA.
Same situation.
Rest in Peace

Take a picture of one coin on top of each other, so we can see the edges.

Copper flattens out easily under normal circulating conditions due to its relative softness. I once did run across another reference to "large 0" and "small 0" varieties of the 1940 penny, but I've searched hundreds of 1940 pennies since then and haven't found anything conclusive. I think the trick to finding any differences in sizing of the date or inscription is to compare higher grade coins, which don't exhibit any great amount of wear. Your "thin date" coin seems alright, so keep your eyes open CPC, and you may yet find that true "fat date" penny.

CPC2013 - can you post pics of both obverse's, if its circulation wear all sides should be equal. The bottom pic with the fat date seems to have detached buds as best as I can see.

Second one is thin side and third one is fat side . I just noticed on the first pictures I took the KG is missing on the thin one .Looking closer I can see the imprint of KG looks like its worn , yet nothing else is worn as much . Interesting .

Thanks for showing both sides. With the KG missing it dosn't really look like wear maybe the die had some metal stuck in there. As for the fat date perhaps a little bit worn die mixed with circulation wear. Interesting though Iam going to start keeping an eye out for that.

I like the missing KG. I'll have to check mine out to see if I have one the same.
