Threads like these are important. I have a couple area clubs to pick from. I think I will give one a try next month.

While I don't think it's all doom and gloom just yet, supporting your local area clubs is now more important than ever. I know the club everyone is speaking of and anytime one folds regardless of the reason, it's a sad day for the hobby.
I belong to a half dozen or more clubs and a few national/regional organizations such as the O.N.A. and R.C.N.A. but focus most of my attention on my home club in Waterloo, Ontario. I understand the value of attending various meetings and helping each other out by sharing information, promoting activities and ideas. Our meetings have a good mix of club members from across the Province.
The age old problem of too much work and far too few helpers, coupled with and every increasing age range really makes it very difficult for some clubs to continue. I'm not surprised to hear at least one club on the verge of closing as meeting rooms and expenses can easily exceed the income collected from memberships in many cases.
Can anyone remember a brand new club staring up in the last 3-4 decades? I can think of lots of towns in Ontario that used to have active clubs but have never been able to fill the void left behind when they closed. The motivation just isn't there like it used to be given all the other distractions, online auctions and the internet.
Understandably, there are more problems than solutions but thanks to some very wonderful hardworking dedicated hobbyists who put their clubs and organizations first, there's lots of fun an exciting meetings to attend. As many of us are finding out, those who we rely on the most won't be around forever, so we shouldn't take them for granted.

An official announcement was recently published locally regarding the closure of the Cambridge Coin Club. http://www.cambridgetimes.ca/opinio...l-charities/Still trying to find out whether Strathroy is going to be able to hang on and hope that the earlier Canada Post announcement won't further hinder the remaining clubs that mail out their newsletters to a majority of their members. 2014 looks to be another challenging year!

That's a shame. It shows there's a lot more than a healthy bank account needed in keeping a club going.

SO sad to read through this thread. However, the writing is on the wall. If we cannot sustain local coin clubs, then the Internet is the alternative. I have made the decision for myself to contribute online in such a way as it preserves the friendly touch of a face to face meeting.

Good news, the coin club formally known as Strathroy is now moving back to Watford. The first meeting is the 3rd Sunday in January at the Lambton Mutual Insurance building on the corner of #79 and Confederation road. 2 o,clock is the meeting time but everyone likes to show up about 1:30. Everyone is welcome.

Thanks for the update cownick! Can I include this info in the Waterloo Coin Society newsletter? Strathroy and Watford are a long drive from K-W but our members will be happy to know the club is still going.
True, money in the bank or investments won't keep a club going if there are not enough members or a strong executive and volunteers to do the jobs needed to serve the membership.
I strongly disagree that the Internet is a viable alternative to coin club meetings. Unfortunately the reality is that we are becoming less and less of an interactive social society. While it does offer many benefits particular if you are not mobile, it will never replace the one on one interaction and valuable learning experience you get from attending meetings.

I have to strongly agree. While I highly recommend both venues, I have learned, seen and experienced much as a direct result from my involvement in coin clubs (whether local, regional or national) that I couldn't have online.
