You can talk prices till the cows come home but you wont get much from it. The market is way too liquid...one day, a coin might sell for £50, the next for 99p. I saw a Nero tetradrachm, silver, got for 99p + postage the other day. And I've seen what I strongly suspect was the same coin go for £40. Its difficult to say.
For Scyphates, I reckon AncientNoob or Echizento will be your best bet. I've been after an Aspron trachy for a while but they're very pricey.

Thanks Ben, I realise that prices change like the wind.....I sell on ebay. I have been offered a large number of Billon scyphate cup coins and wanted to show some pics of before and after cleaning and check out whether I am paying too much as they seem to go for peanuts.

Well, if you're selling good billon trachys, you can try some sly tactics - if bronze, keep the patina, but if you can get it to look like silver, you're golden - just whack the patina off. And theres some chemical means to ebb the copper out of the surfacer to get a better silver colour, but its a bit dishonest. Id advocate selling them to dealers - I've had some good luck selling coins to dealers - they offer a set price and they often take the whole lot - sometimes its worth selling for a small profit rather than risk the chance of going into the red on a lot.

You already have it seems!
The coins arent the nicest but they arent culls either. None of them seem to be billon though. You can see clearly the 2 part minting process with the over laps on some of them.

to the community I collect Byzantine coin in particular these trachy type. They have a very small amount of silver in they less than .4%. When they first were struck they did have a silver wash but that was soon rubbed off. From your pictures you did and excellent job in cleaning them. They all appear to be of the emperor Manuel I and are fairly common. With full legends and better details these coins could sell in the $40-$50 range each, however your examples are in the $10-$15 range. I do not recommend that you try and alter the appearance of the coins by chemecial treatment, it is dishonest and could ruin an other wise nice coin. As collectors it is our responsibility to preserve these historical pieces from the past. It is fine to clean the dirt off them as you have already done but not to modify there natural condition.

Thanks.....I knew nothing about them, but having bought a few a while ago I felt I ought to learn about them (well a bit anyway!) I have been offered 300 other coins of this grade at £5GBP each. I guess this isn't a bad deal then and there may be some rarer types in there, who knows? Sadly the reverses are not so good as the obverse.

You didn't do bad with what you paid. Years ago I bought a large number of these at $7 a piece in that lot was one extremely rare coin that paid for that lot and than some. Byzantine coins have been overlooked by most ancient coin collectors, but are now started to take hold. So there value is starting to go up.
BTW they are billon but the silver content is very little as I said in my first reply.

Thanks, I thought they were billon too. I have 70 others to clean and then I am buying the others I think..... I was worried at £5 as I see they sell for peanuts on ebay, but I am sure there are a few rarer ones in the 300? I hope there are anyway. Is it generally the obverse which is better than the reverse, as the reverse is a bit shabby on these. (I mean the emperor portrait side as the obverse......Is this how it works with scyphates?) Also, can photos be posted on the follow up replies or only the initial post? thanks for your help. YOC

No actually that's the reverse. The obverse is either the images of Christ or Mary. You can post before and after pictures. It's best to post one or two coins at a time to get the most replies. We are here to help so don't be afraid to ask questions.
Also check out the Sticky thread at the top of the forum there is lots of excellent information about Byzantine coins and ancient coins in general that you may find useful.

Quote: I guess I dont use quick reply? as it doesn't have a picture upload icon? Correct; if you wish to download pictures in a reply, you have to click on the "Reply to Topic" link up near the top centre of the page, or the little tiny "reply to topic" icon (the one with the purple arrow) in the bottom right and top right corners of the thread box. Or you can post a quick reply, then click on the "Edit Reply" icon above the post in question.
