Hi,
Just thought I would say hello and ask for a bit of help, me and my children have decided to start a collection of coins, nothing fancy but something for them to take an interest in.

To stat us of my mother has given me this coin as pictured, which she found in the late 1940's in Nantwich, Cheshire, England buried in her back garden, it has then been kept in a sealed box until this last week.

I think its Edward lll and a half groat, it's been tested as being silver and that all I know about it, any info would be great and it's value as I don't want my kids messing with it, if it's worth something which I doubt it is.

It is a Henry VI Groat (Fourpence), which puts it in the mid 15th century. It has the Calais mintmarks as rooneydog already stated.

Here is a website that will help with further Identification: http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk

The mintmark raybutler is referring to is the legend on the inner circle on the reverse (the back). It reads VILLA CALISIE, or "Town of Calais."
We can also say this coin is of an "annulet issue," referring to the two rings to either side of the king's neck, and nestled in two of the clusters of pellets (dots) on the reverse, which places this coin in the earliest years of Henry VI's reign, 1422-27.

Does anyone know or translate what is written on the coin and it's current market value, if any.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you so much to all, especially Philadelphian. For putting me on the right track.

It would also be nice to know if it's worth anything.

Not many of these have sold on ebay - good places other than there to look for what these have sold for in the past are Heritage ( http://www.ha.com ) and Coin Archives ( http://www.coinarchives.com ). Make sure to specify 'completed auctions' on ebay and Heritage.

I don't have my UK book handy at the moment, so can't look up mintages. If nobody else chimes in soon, I'll see if I can locate it.

I see a few in lots here: http://www.londoncoins.co.uk/?page=...searchtype=1

And it looks like ebay UK has had a few (I only looked on US previously. Look for ones in green, that look like the same type and condition as yours): http://www.ebay.com/sch/Later-Medie...lete=1&rt=nc

But it also probably depends on the type or variety. We have a couple of experts here who may chime in, but there are also publications where you can try to find it yourself. There were a few publications on these; go here: http://www.britnumsoc.org/publicati...J/1945.shtml and look for C. E. Blunt and C. A. Whitton, The Coinages of Edward IV and of Henry VI (restored) Parts I II and III.

I'm going to move this to the Great Britain forum, so it will hopefully get some more attention there.

S1836 and a nice coin.
The obverse is pleasing and the reverse less so due to being slightly off centre.

Now for the bad bit.It is the probably the most common groat.
Spink values F £40 VF £135.
Now is the hard bit each coin is hand struck so giving a coin a grade is difficult.
You can have an as struck coin with parts of the legend flat.

The value of the coin will be somewhere between the 2 values...maybe £70 to £90

This is mine and cost me £60 a couple of years ago.

Its a very nice example and I suspect worth a bit more than that, even with the wear which is to be expected.

Hi,
I have decided to list it on ebay, as my thinking is with the money it raises my children can buy quite a few coins to start of their collection instead of having just the one.
I must admit I am quite surprised of its value, but looking forward to starting a new collection with my children and gaining some knowledge from yourselfs.
