this private mint commemorative isn't exactly in the same realm as the other coins in this forum but the edge damage is similar to but more extreme as the whack on one of my UNC Morgans. That's why I'm interested in this type of damage. I know my Morgan could have been dropped somewhere between the die and being packaged in a roll but it seems you would have to hit one with a hammer to cause a dent like this.
So is this kind of ding a result of a die stamp problem or did someone drop it out the 3rd floor window of a book depository?

the red arrow would be redundant with any other coin

Image deleted by Mike....Family Forum, G rated photo's only Please post the Morgan! Thanks, Mike

I hesitated before posting the coin pic and then I thought anyone reading a post about strange marks on coins must be an adult. On the comment about a coin holder I could then see it was my inability to distinguish coin from holder that was the problem. I planned to replace Marilyn with a scan of my pinched Morgan.

Mike, you can also edit out my membership if you like.
I'm not sure I want to associate with a group of people who would be frightened/offended/shocked? by an art image that has circulated the world for the last 50 years. But then to each his own mores. isn't that the way we have to feel? I have to agree, it must be an inappropriate image. After all we are a puritanical society that on one hand readily accepts TV images of dead soldiers and aid workers and children who were in the wrong place at the wrong time and so then murdered in most vile means for most vile causes. Astonishingly that death and destruction doesn't seem to provoke much outrage these days. Yet Americans are shocked and aghast if we see an image of a nude human. And heaven forbid that a child (gasp) should encounter a picture of nudity. They could be mentally damaged by an image of natural beauty.
I have never understood our fear of nudity and or sensuality/sexuality when I was a child and 60 years later its still a mystery.
Im neither angered nor embarrassed that the Marilyn was removed. This after all is a public forum owned and operated by a private person and I am after all a guest in this house. I am however deeply saddened that our society's mores are so grotesquely twisted.

maybe thats what I'm seeing now that I look at it as having a plastic holder. since Ive never seen that coin before I didnt know where the rim boundry was. Now I feel silly! Never the less, my Morgan I spoke of has the same kind of _clamped_ look on the rim in several places. Have you seen that before?

Hi goldfinger. Thank you for your observations. I did not set up the rules that are applied on this forum although I think they are simple and practical given the nature of the forum. My personal feelings are not very important either. I do in fact share many of the views you have stated but that is not the point. It is up to us as individuals to make choices every day. No one passed moral judgement on you and no one really has a right to. If a child's parents choose to share the image you posted with their child that too is their private business. It is not up to Coin Community to provide the service of making that decision for them. I explained to you that we encourage YN's participation here and try to provide an atmosphere that is safe for all ages. For the record, your assumption that only adults would read the post is quite wrong. It is no easy task to insure these rules are enforced as we grow larger. In fact, the title, which I did not edit may have been a better choice to edit than the actual image. There are many forums out there that would have no problem with the image you posted. I am also aware that we can't hide children from all the harsh realities that exist in the world today. That is quite clear based on your own very astute observations. I/we are in a position that requires addressing complaints from time to time. There were several made in reference to the image you posted. It is up to you whether you choose to remain an active member on this forum. I truly hope you choose to stay.
I thought I politely explained my reason for removing the image and did not intend the action to be viewed as an act of prudishness. I feel that parents ultimately have the responsibility to determine what their children do and mine is to insure that CC remains as family friendly as possible so that parents feel comfortable letting their children spend some time here perhaps getting away from the images and pressures they must sadly confront every day . If you want to discuss this further please PM me. I would be happy to talk offline about my views and observations and look forward to hearing more of yours. Peace, Mike

Well said, Mike.
I would expect that any "images of dead soldiers and aid workers and children" would also be deleted from this forum.

This is a very family friendly site and to keep it that way we sometimes have to sacrifice a picture or two of our "freedom".

I'm just sorry that I missed seeing the photo before it got deleted. LOL.
Rest in Peace

Thanks Toast. It was a very timid(by today's standards)image to be sure. I am just trying to be consistent. We are trying to maintain the basic premise of this forum, that it truly is a "community" and very family friendly. I'm not a big fan of censorship but it just did not fit in with the standards we are trying to maintain on his forum. I did not intend to offend goldfinger and hope that I did not anger him or make him feel unwelcome. Mike

I, too, have no problem with you removing that particular image. There are tens of thousands of sites on the web where pictures much worse than that can be posted; there are, I'm sure, other coin forums where it could be posted. CC doesn't have to apologize to any of us for clearly setting rules and standards. We all agreed to abide by them at the time we joined.

I, too, hope that Goldfinger will rejoin us; I'm sure he has much to add to the discussions on the forum.

Goldfinger, 1st welcome to the forum, I surely hope you decide to stay. This truly is on of the finest forums on the net with many experts willing to share their knowledge.

In regards to your coin, I am sure that no one here was offended by it. My guess is it was called into question only because of the standards this forum is based on. It is not censorship, prudishness or even puritanism, it is simply a level of decorum established at day one. Right or wrong, we all try hard to maintain it, just like a dress code in a restaurant. It is not established to judge anyone, it is there only to set the bar so to speak.

Again, welcome, I look forward to seeing more of your collection.

I just want to clear something up about the word censorship, since I feel its being misused here.

If you want to call it censorship, fine.

If something is removed because it is against the forum rules I do not call it censorship, I call it rule enforcement.

Just as I do not call it censorship for not letting my 6 year old drop F-bombs. (This is certainly not that bad, but principally speaking it's no different)

Rules are rules.
Censorship is censorship.

Let's keep them separate.

Please do not quote me the definition of censorship, I know what it means and it doesn't apply here as I have explained.

On this forum rule enforcement overrules the "technical" definition of censorship.
