The original obverse legend (1937-1947) used the Latin abbreviation " ET IND: IMP:" indicating the King was the Emperor of India. The granting of Independence to India caused problems for the
Royal Canadian Mint in the early part of 1948. The new obverse coinage tools without the "ET IND: IMP:" would not arrive for several months, yet there was a great need of coinage of all denominations. To overcome this problem the mint struck coins dated 1947 with the old obverse design but added a tiny maple leaf after the date to differentiate it from the regular 1947 strikings. When the new master tools with the new obverse design arrived later that year the 1947 maple leaf production was halted, and coins with the new obverse design and true date went into production.
