Hi everybody,
I'm new to this forum. I have a small collection that I'd almost forgotten about - sets of four 50-cent pieces, 1996-1998. I was delighted to find them in a packed-away box and started looking through them. One set had never been opened - the box still have the original shrink-wrap around it. When I opened it to look at the coins, which are in individual hard clear plastic cases, one of the four coins was very tarnished and yellow/gold around the edges.

Is this normal? All of my other sets, and including the other 3 coins in that set, appear perfect. I'm sure the damage is irreparable, but wonder if I should be protecting my other coins somehow?

Any advice or comments would be appreciated, thanks.

If they are silver 50 cent pieces, the discolouring is more than likely toning, which some people prefer and seek out. What series are these from (what are the designs on the back of them.)

The discolored coin is from the "Discovering Nature" series, a 1997 set titled "Canada's Best Friends." The coin in question is the Canadian Eskimo Dog.

The discoloration is not unattractive, partly because it is symmetrical, darkening towards the coin edge. But I was quite disappointed - having never seen it in its original condition!

murph, the coin looks fine! I'd say leave the coins as they are in their holders.
