I find it has all the personality of a subway token. But I agree with canuckyank--it would look better if it were struck in copper.

While I agree that the LMC was due for a design change, I don't like the shield cent that much. It's just kind of a cheap, generic design. The Mint had a lot of design ideas before, my favorite was the wheat-stalk bundle reverse design.

Harkens back to the good old days, you know?

Well for those who do like the coin, have you been able to put together a set of what has been released so far from circulation?
I am having a tough time finding nice specimens in my area.

I like the symbolism of the shield design for the Lincoln coin. I think the memorial reverse was unimaginative. Especially symbolically.

I've been able to find all the dates of this century, P and D, in really nice shape from circulation. Took about 4 boxes of pennies, though, and some of the 2009-D's could use an upgrade.

I thought the shield cent was first issued in 2010.

My least favorite of ANY penny design, ever. Not horrid, but a true let down after the great reverses in 09. Just plain blah blah.

Call me odd, but I like it. Yes, it could have been better, but it could have been so much worse.

For those who do not like it, live with the comfort of the knowledge that it will never see 50 years.

I didn't like it at first. But as I've started to see them in circulation I've come to like having ONE coin with a simple, traditional design.

PLUS (and this came as serendipity from using one at random as a photo test target), with magnification the broad flat areas give you a real-world appreciation for the dings and whacks a coin suffers. This is a small slice with a microscope of a 2013D cent so new it still has the cartwheel effect: The-Lincoln-Shield-Cent

cartwheel

1. The pleasing effect seen on some coins when they are rotated in a good light source. The luster rotates around like the spokes of a wagon wheel. A term applied mainly to frosty Mint State coins, especially silver dollars, to describe their luster. Also, a slang term for a silver dollar.

I have found a ton of them in my area. I have many rolls. I don't think I have saved the 2013's though like I did the 2010s-2012s.
