Hey,

My Grandfather just recently passed away and the family has been cleaning through some of the stuff around his house. We came across a coin, which we cannot seem to identify.

It reads on the face side "Koningin Der Nederlander Juliana"
On the reverse side it reads "Koningrijk Der Nederlander 5 mei 1970" and "10 Fl"

all we managed to find was that the FL means florijn and that 5 mei means the 5th of may.

I have linked some pictures I took of the coin.

Reverse Side: http://i.imgur.com/hY8QLjV.jpg

Thank you for your time, it would mean a lot if you could identify it.

Daniel

Condolences on your loss.

I do not think it is a coin but a commemorative medal / token of 25 years from the date of surrender of the Germans in Holland on the 5th May 1945.

Further than that I cannot help but hopefully another can.
Rest in Peace

It is definitely a Dutch medallion.

The currency of the Netherlands was the gulden, but the older and obsolete denomination called the florin also became associated with the country, and the currency sign for the gulden was a letter "f"... think of how the word "dollar" does not actually start with the letter "S" ($). A real Dutch coin, however, (which, of course, were no longer made in gold for circulation in 1970) would say "10 G", not "10 FL". You can also see this type of evasion with modern fantasy "U.S. doller" coins and the like.

I'm not familiar with the actual medallion, but it is not an official Dutch mint product (the real Dutch mint would be legally enabled to produce a legal-tender coin of 10 gulden, side-stepping that "FL" evasion business). I can't find anything online... but yes, it most likely commemorates 25 years since the liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian and British troops. The shield is quite faithful to real gold 10 gulden coins... Queen Juliana's portrait does not resemble her official coinage portrait at all (which was in profile).
