I was following the bidding on this 2 cent coin

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1872-2-cent...p=true&rt=nc

and thought something might be amiss. The bidding was a bit over $100 until it jumped to over $300 but almost as soon as that happened I noticed the bid was back to $100. The high bidder withdrew the bid.

I took a closer look at the coin and I think I can see why.

Definitely a counterfeit. The numbers in the date are too "blocky", and the tips of the ribbon are way too rounded, those amongst other things just not right...

And curiously, it's a private listing so you can't see who the bidders are... You don't have to wonder why it was set up as such

Yep ... Logotype is totally wrong. Design elements are too mushy.

All the devices are incorrect for a genuine coin.

I wanted to post this coin, but have been busy all weekend at work, thanks for getting it up here on CCF as a warning it is a counterfeit, and not the sellers first counterfeit it seems.

The seller actually had 2 Two Cent coins for sale. In addition to the 1872 there was an 1869 up for bid.

The 1869 had all the same "features" as the 1872.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/16114576479....m1435.l2649

I actually put a bid on it. I thought it would make an interesting () addition to my modest set of Two Cent Pieces.

It looked awfully similar to the fake Two Cent Pieces that used to sell as a complete set 1864-1873 on ebay back when they allowed copies, I'm still kicking myself I never purchased a set just to have as a reference set on counterfeits. As I recall the complete set ran about $30.00 and looked pretty good except the dates seemed to thick. Defintely Chinese copies.

And the photo of the roll top desk he "just got at auction" in Denver, CO? It's a photo from an antique shop in the UK.
Proof now the whole thing is a complete fraud, someone got taken unfortunately.

Google image search is your friend these days, I just copied the link of the image in the auction called up google image search and clicked the little camera icon in the search tab pasted the link and found a whole bunch of links to the antique site and the one ebay link right away. Works pretty good on simple images.

Clearly that Two Cent Piece is counterfeit. I managed to acquire three different sets of counterfeit Two Cent Pieces some years back. Someday they will turn into an Exhibit. This is what a circulation strike 1872 should look like

Here's a bit more worn example of the 1872. The one Penny Guy showed us is sure a beauty. They are a tough find - much more so than the other key (Small Motto '64). PG
