I want to send my 3-Leg to PCGS for cross over from NGC to PCGS. My coin is arriving today, and if it's anything like the pictures I think it will have no problem making PCGS AU58. I also think it may make a low MS.
I've heard of others on here who have submitted coins, some crossed and some didn't. NONE that I have heard of made a higher grade.
So I called PCGS to find out if that was policy, and the lady said no. I also asked if they hide the grade from the graders and she said no they don't. She said, "we have our own standards, so we don't even consider the grade on the slab". It just seems suspicious that I have never heard of a coin that graded higher. Only direct crosses and coins that did not cross.
So, I'm wondering if when I send my Buffalo to PCGS should I cover the NGC grade determination? On one hand I really don't want their opinion being tainted by the NGC grade. But on the other hand, if it's covered, I'm worried they will know what I'm doing and be extra critical.
What do you guys think? Edited by USArmyParatrooper 06/21/2007 4:42 pm

I'd love to see what others have to say.
I'd say you either remove it from the slab completely yourself and make them grade it raw if you're confident that it is at least AU-58;
or you let them see the NGC grade and just pay them to change the slab or not depending on what their mood is.

I'm very tempted to do that. But for what I paid it's not worth the risk on the off chance they lower the grade. BTW, I just received it today and it's beautiful! I think I'm just going to send it in slabbed and hope for the best. Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll admit they're not ALWAYS more picky than everyone else, every time.

When you submit to PCGS for a crossover you can specify that if it will not cross or upgrade that it be left in it's current holder. You will still have to pay, but you will at least not suffer a downgrade. Mike

I would see if they would keep it in the NGC holder if, in their opinion, it will not cross or upgrade.
Just curious, why do you want to cross to the PCGS from NGC?
Take care all.

I don't mean to butt in with an answer but he may want it a PCGS holder because often PCGS slabbed coins fetch more in the market place(generally, not always!)or he likes the PCGS holder or is working on a PCGS registry set. Maybe there are other reasons as well!!! Mike

That's actually correct. PCGS does tend to fetch the highest prices, and I do think their holders are nicer than NGC. ANACS's (new) slabs are really the nicest of all. Unfortunately, right or wrong, they're considered 3rd behind both.

On a cross over you can specify a higher grade and if it won't make it you'll get it back in the original holder.
Or you can send it as a straight crossover and as long as it will meet the original grade or higher it will come back in a new holder. If it doesn't meet the grade it will come back in the original holder.
Or you can do a cross at any grade in which case it is treated as a raw submission, cracked, and sent back in a new holder. The only reaso it would come back in the old holder is if they determine that it would not slab.

Crossovers, in most cases, should be sent in raw to avoid "tainting". I only send in coins to cross if they are worth considerably more in PCGS and I am willing to pay NGC to regrade. Never know, if the coin is worth crossing at PCGS, it might be upgraded when resubmitted to NGC. Last experience of sending in slabbed NGC was earlier this year. Had a dealer friend that does SUBSTANIAL business with PCGS. He took 12 of my high end NGC. AS you can guess the one coin that did cross was the one with the least amount of value difference between the two companies.
