The seller has described this coin as 'rubbed' but looks like it could be AU-55 at worst. Let me know if you think this is a deal @ $500 regardless of a few 'rubs'? I don't usually buy US coins but this one caught my eye for the price.

Listen to the seller. He is admitting the coin has been altered, warranting a Details grade and a significant drop in value. Except he hasn't dropped the value; that's full retail for an AU O-102 (which is the variety I'm thinking it is).

If I'm going to spend as much as $300 on this coin, somebody else already needs to have spent the money on getting it into the slab of a reputable TPG. This is_not a good deal.

Very nice detail on both sides also probably the 1827, 7 over 6 variety. With so many of the surviving coins cleaned in some way the "rub" would not bother me but I am concerned with the scratch like marks in the photo.

Ok great, thanks for your input, I couldn't find my copy of the Red Book so I was looking at the value based on the PCGS website...AU 55 = $1200 but of course had to consider the problems with the coin.

Are the prices on the PCGS website relatively accurate?

I'm concerned as well. $500 is full retail for a mid AU coin that might not be problem free.

edit: 1827/6 Numismedia AU-53: 700 AU-55: 810

Still it would have to be slabbed for me to bite at that price.
