This week, I went to a local branch of my bank (I have accounts there) and asked for $10 in "pennies." The teller (a manager, I think) asked me if I wanted "old" ones, because if I did, they would refuse my request. Apparently someone had recently asked them for "old" ones, and they refused him. So I naturally said that any rolls would do, but I ended up with mostly uncirculated rolls of 2013s as a result. I can see the bank's point that they do not have the resources to sort rolls of coins. Has anyone else encountered this type of situation?

That stinks. I feel for you. Here's a solution: Try a few other local banks with the same request. If you don't have an account with them, start one. They'll get to know you and will probably be nicer than your old bank.
While I have never been refused rolls or given uncirculated ones, there used to be a bank I went to that only gave out $5 in pennies. If I would ask for more, consistently and conveniently they would "run out." I "outgrew" that branch once I needed more rolls than before to get the same results. That bank now gives me a box a week, knows me by name, and asks how my penny collection is going.
Lesson: For every bank that turns you down, there is another that won't. Good luck and happy hunting!

Back in the 1970s and 1980s it was fairly well known in the UK that Lloyds Bank systematically removed all pre-1947 silver from their bags of 5p and 10p coins...

Some banks have become very weary of roll hunters. There are many doofuses out there completely unaware. The person asking "for the old ones" is perfectly innocent, just not well-versed in roll hunting etiquette. That's ruining it for us all.

I am fortunate in that my bank chain has many indivdual branches in my area (about 10 or so near my home and along my 50-mile commute to work each day). I have tried them all with most branches having no problem with me asking for pennies (indeed, even one branch teller told me that they were glad to get rid of them). However, a few of them questioned me as to why I wanted them, have asked to see my account ID, and even asked me for what business I wanted them for. I felt like I was doing something wrong. They are only pennies, for Pete's Sake.

Hey maybe you should start a coin roll hunting ettiquete thread. It might help beginners from making mistakes like that.
If not I can start one.

I am just wondering if you were reading the bank wrong. I have had banks to ask me the same question. No big deal. They know that I search through them and assumed correctly that I did not have any interest in a solid box of new cents. I wish that they would have asked more often. I probably still have about twenty boxes of 2008 P's.

Yep, I had that happen to me with a box of nickels. I graciously took the box. I was able to trade the unopened box at another branch for four boxes of pennies using some ingenuity.
I told the teller I received it as a gag gift. The teller got a good laugh out of the story. So as she started to take the box back to the vault, I asked her, "Hey can I get the equalivant back in pennies? It's payback time." Shaking her head and laughing even harder she said, "Sure."
I guess she wanted to be in on the joke too.

I'm also a novice and I was a bit nervous asking the teller for my first $25 box but she was fairly nice about it. She just said, "Sorry, I'm curious so I have to ask. What do you need a box of pennies for?" I just told her I search through them since I started collecting. After she laid the box on the counter she said, "You have a heavy hobby!"

I just had a bank teller ask me why I wanted $10 in pennies. "For Penny Poker?". I said "Yeah, that's it." I don't know why but I sometimes feel funny about asking for rolls at the bank, especially when they ask what they are for. Like I am doing something wrong, or something.

I know what you mean Centurion, I still feel that way sometimes, even after years of buying rolls.
It's really none of their business what you need the coin for. Some would say otherwise. If they ask, I usually just smile. That's really all they need.

I know how you feel. I used to feel 'guilty' asking for boxes. I bounced from branch to branch reluctantly asking for boxes. I finally settled in on one branch and got to make friends and discuss the hobby with the teller. I usually go in once a week to get a box. The teller now keeps any wheats she finds in the drawer and lets me trade her penny for penny. She said she used to collect but just quit due to the time it takes and having children. I dont feel uncomfortable at all going there now! Plus its great having someone to discuss coins with.

Same with me, cool fool. I used to have the same problem until I found my primary pickup bank. The tellers are really nice and are interested in my finds. Funny, I get a box a week too!

The first time I got a box, I started out just asking for 5 or 10 dollars of pennies. I then asked, unless you have a box I could have. The teller asked the manager if they had a box. It turned out to be my first box of pennies to roll hunt. They were very nice about it. Maybe I will ask for a box of dimes or quarters next. Only thing is I felt bad watching the manager carry the box, as she is right about a hundred pounds soaking wet with rocks in her pockets, she huffed them out of the back on her shoulder.
