I'm sure somebody has noticed this before but I could not find it on this forum. If my eyes are not playing tricks on me then this is a legitimate die variety. High 2  Low 2   Maybe its a short 2 and a tall 2 since the top of the 2's are in roughly the same spot....it's the bottom of the 2's that I see the biggest difference. Or is it Wide 5, narrow 5? If it is a High and/or low 2 it's very hard to tell but there is a difference in height. I know that the 1929 penny,the last 9 on the date had this variety. It looks very close to the same. I also just noticed that one coin looks like they used a "blunt" type lettering while the other looks more square. They may have changed their style of font for the coin?

The difference is not as distinct as the 1929 high 9 but it is noticeable. I found 2 of these in 200 1952 pennies which is not a very big population. Has anybody else found any or looked.

Interesting observation. I have few of BU rolls of 1952 1-cent coins, I should crack them open and see if I have anything similar...

Thanks for another keen eye observation. All of mine are the low (normal) variety. I have never seen a high 2 before.

Also, the top of the 2 on the "high 2" appears to be more closed than on the "regular 2".
Based on some quick surveying, the "high 2" appears to be the scarcer variety. I don't have enough circulated 1952s to form a meaningful random sample. But based on my first set of observations it looks like maybe 10% to 20% may be "high 2".
Ningcumpoop's 12 rolls, if circulated, should probably be a big enough sample to be meaningful.

I am done!  My eyeballs are taxed. I had way more rolls than I thought I did. Here's the results: 24 rolls 1952 pennies = 1200 coins(including the 200 from before) The first time through I took out anything that seemed close to the high 2....I had a pile of about 40 coins. After a more careful observation of this group of 40 pennies I noticed that only 10 of them are close to the one in the picture above but my eyes are sore so I'm going to go watch the Rider game and finish later. I will post a collage of the 10 "maybe's" for all to see later. It might be easier to see the differences with enlarged digital photo's. I wonder what the chances of a variety with this little variation becoming popular if it is so difficult to see.

Very interesting. It seems to me that it is about as hard to spot as the 1929 high 9 is....which also can be tricky. The 1932 High 2 nickel is also a bit tricky. I didn't have that many of my own to go through but I went through the ones on ebay that had usable photos. The proportion that I found with High 2s was far lower than the 10% to 20% I found in my first limited sample...more like your 1% type of figure.

I'm sure I have at least 10 rolls of circulated 1952's. I will look through them when I have a chance and post results.

Well here are the 10 maybe's. I could use your opinions on which ones would qualify and which ones I should exile from the pile. I noticed while looking through this many of the same date the variations in shape, size, etc. of the numerals in the date. I'm not sure how many reverse dies were used in 1952 for pennies but there is definitely some small differences that can be seen. I also found 2 double 952's in the lot. #1  #2  #3  #4  #5  #6  #7  #8  #9  #10

I think the most noticeable ones are 2,4,5,8,9,10. IMO
