I wondered what on Earth "American Fabious" meant. Googling the phrase mainly comes up with pages talking about this medal, or pages talking about a ship by that name (which was presumably named after Washington in this oblique sort of way).
It's apparently an allusion to
Fabius Maximus, the Roman dictator/general whose strategy of non-confrontation in the face of a superior enemy stopped Hannibal from conquering Italy. Given there was a ship in the Virginia State Navy named thus in 1781, I assume it was a title bestowed on Washington during his lifetime.
