This 1813 large cent (S-293 Close Star variety) just arrived today and I'm having difficulty determining the grade. It's a weak strike and has some really strong areas and some really weak areas. I don't know how these affect the grade. The planchet is smooth but there is a ding on the date and lower bust. Would that get the coin a details grade? I'd appreciate your opinions on grade and details.

Nice example. Surfaces look good for this date as a lot show porosity. Tough one to call, the details that are there look VF but the strike is super weak.

The more I look at your coin, and other 293's ,the more I like it! The weakness seems to be fairly consistent with the variety. They all show this strike patter to varying degrees. I can not comment on whether it would garner a details as I would never consider putting it in plastic.

typical strike issues and porosity for classic heads. Need to look at the highest details (particularly the leaves). looks like XF, however, strike would most likely drop it a full grade. IMO the digs on the front and the reverse porosity issue would consider a details grade. If I had to grade it, I would say VF20. Overall this is a nice example of the type.
