yeah I have a few rolls of these.
I'll try to give an example of what happens. it may not be scientifically correct, but picture this.
The die strikes the coin and rests on the base of the coin for a split second.
The hammer die, or the one that offers the strike lifts up and may lift up at a slight angle.
When it lifts up at that angle it may peel away some of what was struck....sort of the wrecking ball that doesn't clear the top of the building and may knock some of it away.
I think most Machine Doubling looks like a payloader may have scraped away part of the letters or numbers.
MD tends to remove part of the numbers and letters in the same direction - so lets say in the coin above, it looks like the first "9" takes damage from the top and slightly south, and since the "S" was probably struck pretty high as well, the die scrapes off part of the "S" in From the north side to the south side.
Turn that coin sideways and see if part of that "9" and "S" have the same sort of damage... same general angle and direction of damage...
