Just wondering if any of y'all have ever replied to an advertisement in a magazine about "free" coins? I noticed one today from The American Historic Society ref. to one pound of wheat-ear pennies. The cost is only $4.95 (processing and handling). It is only available through telephone orders only, so I guess they try to sell you other stuff. If y'all have any comments on this I would appreciate it. Edited by blue2354 06/23/2007 3:12 pm

I tried it, you get what you pay for. Do NOT give them your tele. ## unless you're feeling philanthropic. They will call you daily asking for donations or sell your info to others who call trying to sell you ASE's @ 200% over spot. Their is also a phone ## to call to receive a FREE ASE (I will post it if I can dig it up.) All you have to do is listen to their 10 min. spiel (just answer no to the over-priced stuff they are peddling) and wait 3 months, but you will eventually receive it. They run the offer about once a month and it's nice to call from a few different phone ##s and forget about it. Then enjoy the free silver whenever it surprises you.

Nothing is ever free. There is always a cost.

I have purchased from the American Historic Society, and was satisfied.
What you describe however will require you to accept "approvals," and/or listen to their line of baloney.

Thanks for the info. The ASE coin offer is in the 2008 Red Book right? I think I read that a few days ago, and I just picked up my copy the other day. This is definitely one of the best and most helpful forums I have found. Thanks again.

I would beware. It sounds nice, but I called for the "free" (+$4.95 shipping) silver eagle two months ago, still no coin. They did charge my credit card a month ago though - they said they wouldn't until it shipped. Also, they make you fill out a postcard and pay to mail it back in (within like 2 days) and hope you misplace it and don't get your coin. On the phone, they give you a hard sell for lots of recurring charges (like $14 silver eagles for $49.95 each shipped to you twice a month), so you have to check you CC statements for 3 months watching to see if they charge you for something like that. Just not worth it to save $10 in my opinion.

Has anyone ever used a prepaid credit card? This should eliminate the worry about recurring charges.

I do all my online shopping with Prepaid Virtual CCs...They are fast and safe just link it to bank account and reload before each purchase for given amount, then just let it sit empty until your next purchase.

How about a prepaid credit card (Visa gift, American Express Gift, ect....)that you can buy at the food store that has a set amount (like $50.00)?

Andy - I believe there are fees associated with those types of cards ($10 or so?) that would make it cheaper to just buy a regular SAE for $14 or $15!
As for the prepaid virtual CCs, those are a good idea, unless there are similar fees.
