I have a small collection of British silver coins and thought this one would make a nice addition to the set. In-hand it seems fully original to me and it has lots of luster. What do you think?

Very few Gothic florins survived in this sort of top grade condition. The half crown issue was replaced 1852-73 by the Gothic florin, and the denomination generally saw very heavy circulation.
That's why examples in this sort of condition tend to be rather pricey.

This one is a little weakly struck on some of the leopards' faces, but is rather normal for this issue.

My COIN YEARBOOK 2011 notes:
"beware of recent forgeries", but I do NOT know how to pick these.

Caveat Emptor! The fakes are plentiful and well executed and as Sel said, these are usually well circulated. Send pictures to an expert in the UK (try emailing the appropriate curator at the BM).

Apparently the British museum charges 100 pounds/hour for a consultation with a curator so no thanks. If authenticity is a serious concern I can just send the coin in to ANACS for grading and authentication. Maybe the potential value of a genuine piece in this condition warrants a submission.

For what it's worth, this coin has the luster and toning that I would expect from a vintage die-struck silver coin. There is a fine die crack through VICTORIA and some raised die polish lines between some of the ornamental rim beads around the obverse rim. Weight is 11.33 grams which I believe is correct for the issue. The edge reeds are sharply formed.

Does anyone have opinions (good or bad!) about this piece in particular?

£100 an hour? Nah, send them an email of the picture, they'll get back to you eventually. I've bugged them a few times and they've always been helpful. Even went and handed them some stuff to ID - they do a good service, and a free one.

There are plenty of forgeries but the majority are 1864.

I hadn't really thought about the risk of a counterfeit when purchasing this coin but the CCF responses made me wonder. I sent the coin to ANACS for grading and authentication. I just got their emailed report and they not only determined it is genuine but is also a problem-free choice mint state piece grading MS-64. Calls for a piece of fruit I think!

I'll post photos once FedEx delivers my package.

Here's the coin in its ANACS holder. Am I wrong in thinking that my cost of $279 for this piece turned out to be a pretty good deal?
